Triple Creek  Patriots @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  Penultimate series of the season sees Triple Creek coming to Columbus. Explorers finish the season at home and they hope they aren’t looking too far ahead to the season finale against Tempe – for the division on probable top spot in the NL.
Game #1:  Opening game features some seriously good pitching (or poor hitting), but the mound crews looked great. Andrew Benintendi opens the game with a single, but Ervin Santana only gives up 1 more hit – to Marwin Gonzalez. MGon gets 2 hits in the game, but 3 hits were all the Patriots could muster. Ahem – the Explorers only outdid them by 1 hit and it was an RBI double in the 4th by Paul DeJong. 1 run was all the scoring. Kevin Gausman was stellar – 7 ip, 4 hits, 10ks but 1 run – which sounds good, but the Explorer mound crew kept the Patriots to 3 hits and NO runs.
TCP 0-3-0 LP Gausman (7-11)
COL 1-4-2 WP Santana (15-3) S David Robertson (40)
Game #2:  There was nothing Triple Creek did wrong in this one – there was a lot the Explorers didn’t, couldn’t, or wouldn’t do. Corey Seager, 2 hits, runs and rbis and a homer (20). Stephen Piscotty – well, 2 hits, 2 walks, SF, 3 runs and 4 rbis – not a bad day! Jonathan Villar – a homer (4), single, 3 runs and 2 rbis, 2 walks. All that sounds good, but the biggest player was Alex Wood. 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 run and 3 Ks – totally in control.
TCP 14-13-1 WP Wood (10-8)
COL 3- 9-1 LP Happ (15-7)
Game #3:  If you look at the final score of this one, you’d think the Explorers walked all of the Patriots – but 4 Triple Creek errors in the 1st 4 innings allowed 7 unearned runs. Columbus has 7 runs at one point on 3 hits! But at the same time, Lance McCullers was doing a good thing on the hill – going 7, 4 hits, 2 runs and 9ks. Clay Bellinger (48), Marwin Gonzalez (19) and Lonnie Chisenhall (9) all homer for the Patriots. 2 of them in the 9th of Tony Watson. Charlie Blackmon homers (30) and drives in 3, Paul DeJong homers (29) for 2 runs.
TCP 4-7-4 LP A.J. Griffin (8-8)
COL 11-8-0 WP McCullers (15-2)
Game #4:  In a see-saw game, the Explorers started first and finished first with some tight spots in the middle. Columbus gets up 5-0 through 3, then the Patriots explode for 4 in the 4th. Daniel R. Robertson (2 run double) is the biggest bang in the rally. Then Corey Seager luanches a solo shot (21) in the 6th to tie it up and send Parker Bridwell to the showers. But in the bottom half, the Explorers explode for 4 runs and it never gets close again. Matt Carpenter contributed with a 3 run homer (28). Eduardo Nunez added a 2 run homer (11) in the game. Bad news for Columbus – Tyler Flowers gets HBP for the 10th time this year and again will be sidelined. 11 days, which would take him into the post season. Ugh.
TCP 6- 6-0 LP Andrew Triggs (0-1)
COL 9-14-0 WP Chris Rusin (8-3) BS (5) S David Robertson (41)
Game #5:  Explorers start with 4 in the 1st and never look back. Must be the Tomlin effect. 15 hits and 11 runs in support of Josh Tomlin. Tomlin looked good, again, going 6, giving up 6 hits, a run and fanning 8. Will he even see post season activity with his 12-5 record (and 3.27 era). Eduardo Nunez (12), Charlie Blackmon (31) and Paul DeJong (30) homer for Columbus.
TCP 1- 7-0 LP Sean Newcomb (4-12)
COL 11-15-0 WP Tomlin (12-5)
Game #6:  Perhaps the most entertaining game of the series. Jordan Lyles gets the rare start and he’s itchy. Patriots take full advantage getting 5 hits from the 6 guys he faces and when inning one is done, Triple Creek has plated 4 guys. Lonnie Chisenhall (3 hits inthe game) drives in the 1st run, Caleb Joseph gets 2 more. Columbus claws back with 2 in the 2nd on Ian Desmond (8) and Ryan Zimmerman (33) homers. But Triple Creek gets 1 back in the 3rd on a Chase Headley rbi double. Columbus matches the run in the half of the inning and it’s 5-3 after 3. Then Alex Avila homers (7) to open the 6th and Kevin Gausman is gone. But so is the scoring. We move to the 9th, Triple Creek leading 5-4 and Matt Carpenter, Charlie Blackmon and Zimmerman due up. Neftali Feliz is called on to pitch and he gives up 2 walk, fans one and then offers up a Baltimore Special to Shin-Soo Choo (20) and the game is over on the 3 run walk-off homer!
TCP 5-14-0 LP Feliz (0-2) BS (2)
COL 7-11-0 WP Darren O’Day (6-6)
Series Summary:  So the final outcome is 5 games for Columbus and 1 for Triple Creek. Flowers will not be around for next week’s season finale series against Tempe. Both teams are in the post season – but who will be a Wild Card. Plus, the Explorers remember the opening week pounding they received at the hands of the Tempers (6-1 series for Tempe!). Pay back, post season ranking, and all that – and yet, they’ve been trading partners making Columbus better this year and probably adding some cement to the long term Tempe legacy in the offing. But that’s what it’s all about.

Detroit  Crime @ Dallas  Cougars

Series Preview:  Two teams destined for the postseason. Detroit has a playoff spot clinched while Dallas has their magic number down to 4. Dallas enters their final home series 6th in batting at .249, 2nd in steals with 91, and 2nd in ERA at 3.14. The Cougars on a 6 game winning streak have the 2nd best home record in the AL at 56 and 19. The Crime come to Dallas with the 3rd best road record at 43 and 26. On the league leader boards Detroit is 9th in batting at .240, 2nd in homers with 224, and first in ERA at 2.96.
Game #1:  New Cougar Justin Smoak breaks a 2-2 tie in the 6th by hitting his 29th homer of the season to put Dallas up 4 to 2. Andrew Toles provided some insurance with a 2 run homer in the 7th.
Dallas wins 6 to 3
Game #2:  Singles by Ryan Goins and Austin Jackson turn a 2-3 deficit into a 4-3 lead for Detroit in the 7th inning. Any chance for a bigger inning was snuffed out when Gregory Polanco threw out Brett Phillips at third base on Goins game tying RBI single. Mike Minor pitched the final two innings to complete the victory.
Detroit wins 4 to 3
Game #3:  The Crime jumped ahead 5-0 and two run homer by Kendry Morales in the 5th and coasted from there. The only surprise was when coverage player Culberson hit a three run homer for Dallas.
Detroit wins 7 to 4
Game #4:  Dominant pitching performance by both starting pitchers combining to give up only 5 total hits. One of the hits for Detroit was a solo home run by Adam Jones in the 5th. It was looking like another win for the Crime until the bottom of the 9th. Yangervis Solarte leads off the 9th with a lead off double. One batter later Ken Giles came on to face Nick Hundley with Solarte on third, “They’re pulled in around the infield … at third SOLARTE takes a short lead … here’s a pitch swung on … blooper down the right field line … MAYBIN racing in … it drops SOLARTE coming down the line … and he scores … tie ballgame! … HUNDLEY’s headed for second the throw … the tag … and he’s safe! … double and an RBI CRIME 1, COUGARS 1 So the double scores one big one … and the COUGARS have tied this game! … just listen to that crowd!” Back to back wild pitches gave Dallas the victory.
Dallas wins 2 to 1
Game #5:  Dallas scores three times in the 5th highlighted by Justin Smoak’s 30th homer of the year – a two run shot. Carlos Gomez would add to the scoring with a solo home run in the 6th and then Manny Pina capped off the scoring with a 2 RBI double in the 8th.
Dallas wins 6 to 1
Game #6:  Needing one more start to qualify for starting in the post season Brent Suter started the game for Dallas, but only pitched the first inning. Jose Abreu gives Dallas a 1-0 lead with a two out RBI single in the 3rd. Cameron Maybin ties the game for the Crime in the 5th by singling home Yasmani Grandal and then Detroit goes in front when SS Culberson bobbles a potential double play grounder off the bat of Kyle Schwarber. Detroit adds to their lead when Ben Zobrist lead off the 7th with his 9th homer of the year. Andrew Toles brought the Cougars within a run when he lead off the bottom of the 8th with his 8th homer of the year. Later in the inning with two outs Jose Abreu reaches on an error, “MINOR brings it … slowly rolled toward ZOBRIST … and it slips out of his glove ABREU reaches on the miscue … ZOBRIST started to throw before he had the ball” Next batter Jedd Gyorko provide the game winning hit, “The pitch … GYORKO lines one deep to right … MAYBIN’s got a long way to go … still after it he’s on the track … and it clears the fence! … home run for GYORKO – his 17th”
Dallas wins 4 to 3
Series Summary:  Dallas takes the series 4 games to 2.
With the four wins Dallas clinches the AL East Division title for the 2nd time in team history.
With the four losses combined by Chicago’s sweep of Southwest Detroit the Crime find themselves 1 game behind the Mobsters in determining home field advantage for the AL Wild Card series.

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Valdosta  Snappers

Game #1:  Valdosta 11-4. Brandon McCarthy (7-1) got plenty of offense as the Snappers cruise to the win. Hunter Renfroe homered twice for the home team.
Game #2:  Bethesda 6-5. Alex Cobb improves to 15-2 as the Bandicoots slip past the Snappers.
Game #3:  Valdosta 2-1. Adam Wainwrght tossed 8 shutout innings to improve to 10-11. Craig Kimbrel made it interesting in the 9th but held on for his 38th save.
Game #4:  Bethesda 5-2. Bandicoots homered 3 times to power their way to the win.

Game #6:  Valdosta 4-1. Brandon McCarthy improved to 8-1 with 8 innings of 2 hit ball. Craig Kimbrel for save # 39.

Coconut Creek  Crushers @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview:  Both teams out of any race,…just playing for respectability.
Game #1:  VIR 8-5 W-Luis Castillo (9-4) L-Amir Garrett (2-10)

Homers by Will Myers and Adam Duvall put CCC up 3-0 in the top of the 1st. However, the Sluggers responded with 4 runs in the 2nd capped by Devon Travis’ solo shot. Vir scratched out an unearned run in the 3rd and Lewis Brinson finished a 2-3 day with a 2-run blast in the 7th to put VIR up 8-3 and the bullpen held off a late Crusher rally.

Game #2:  CCC 14-13 W-Danny Barnes (5-7) L-Cory Gearrin (4-7)

A wild on. CCC cranks out 18 hits and VIR 19. Mookie Betts had a monster game. 5-6 with 9 RBI! This included a grand slam in the 5th inning. Robbie Grossman also connected for a solo shot and scored 4 runs for the Crushers. But it was a 2-run double by Betts in the 10th that provided the winning margin.

Game #3:  CCC 10-0 W-Zach Godly (10-9) L-Chris Tillman (4-10) SV-Joe Musgrove (1)

Godley and Musgrove combine for 12 K’s as they shut-out VIR on 6 hits. Adam Duvall, Mookie Betts and Jordy Mercer all homered for CCC.

Game #4:  VIR 4-3 W-Silvino Bracho (1-0) L-Max Povse (1-1)

Behind 3-2 in the 6th, Virginia’s Clint Frazier’s RBI single tied the game at 3-all and led to 8 more innings. Finally, in the 14th, Devon Travis put one over the left-centerfield wall to give VIR a hard fought win.

Game #5:  VIR 9-0 W-Daniel Wright (4-0) L- Amir Garrett (2-11)

Wright scattered 9 hits over 7 innings and kept any Crushers from crossing the plate. Tyler Danish threw goose-eggs over the last 2 innings and VIR had the shut-out. Jean Segura and Rafael Devers went deep for VIR and Whit Merrifield poked 3 hits.

Game #6:  CCC 4-3 W-Brad Peacock (5-3) L-Trevor Cahill (3-14) SV_ Danny Barnes (21)

Jose Martinez laced a 3-run triple in the 3rd that turned out to be the winning RBI’s in a game that saw the Crushers manage just 4 hits. VIR staged a comeback but Barnes put out the fire with a 2 inning save.

Series Summary:  Virginia and Coconut Creek split the series 3-3.

Mesa  Solar Sox @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview:  After 150 games…both these teams entered this series at 64-86. Do I smell a split?
Game #1:  A fun opener. A see-saw game. Both pens gave it away. Whichever team batted last was going to win this one. Mike Zunino hit his 24th HR. YSS 7 – MSS 6
Game #2:  Clayton Richard spun a gem. 7+, 1ER, 7K. MSS 3 – YSS 1
Game #3:  A slugfest through 4 innings. Both teams ended with 9H and 6BB. Mesa swatted 4 XBH (3 HRs and a 2B), Yonge Street countered with 4 XBH of their own (3 2Bs and a HR). Yonge Streets hits were better. There was no scoring after the 4th. YSS 8 – MSS 6
Game #4:  Mesa scored 4 in the 8th inning off Enny Romero to make it look better. Eric Thames 30th HR was a grand slam. He plated 5. YSS 10 – MSS 4

Game #6:  Scooter Gennett homered and plated 4 while Eric Thames hit another homer (32) and knocked in 3 more. Odubel Herrera and Jesus Aguilar each hit a double and a homer in the losing effort. YSS 8 – MSS 3
Series Summary:  The Stalkers waited until game 151 to show some spine. YSS won the opener to extend the Sox swoon to 10 games. Mesa broke the streak in the second game then fell apart. The Solar Sox head home to end the season hosting VIR. YSS heads to CHI to (likely) get thumped.

Tempe  Tempers @ Harsens Island  Walleye

Series Preview:  The Tempers visited the Walleye for a six games series. Harsens Island is looking forward to adding some early picks and the chance to further expand on their youth movement. Tempe needs a sweep to have any chance at the NL Central race and may need to be content with home field advantage in the wild card round.
Game #1:  Tempe jumped out to an early lead with homeruns by Bogaerts and Franchy. A grand slam by Gardner was a little too late, but it definitely made things closer.
Tempe 7-5
Game #2:  Homeruns by Carrera and Davidson led the way for the Walleye
Harsens Island 6-2
Game #3:  The Walley jumped out to the early lead behind a two run homerun by McCann. Beltre tied it in the 8th with a two run homerun and he walked with bases loaded in the 9th to drive in the winning run. Bogaerts doubled in two more in the 9th to put it away.
Tempe 5-2
Game #4:  Tempe gunned Camargo at the plate in the 8th to preserve the victory. Bogaert homered again.

Tempe 14-4
Game #6:  Lester went 7 innings for the win. Ozuna drove in a couple more runs.
Tempe 6-2
Series Summary:  The Walleye were in most of the games, but they ended up only winning of 1 of 6. Tempe wasn’t able to get the sweep they needed and will remain two back of Columbus. Might be time to forget about the Division and rest the starters next week. Ozuna, Votto, and Bogaerts all had good series.

Motor City  Muscle @ Fremont  Cannons

Game #1:  Two homers by John Hicks and 3 errors by Fremont lead to an 8-4 Motor City win. Justin Verlander wins his 15th.

Game #6:  Austin Pruitt keeps the Muscle bats in check, and the Cannons win the finale 3-1.
Series Summary:  Fremont takes the series 4-2! Scripts available on request.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Hollywood  Werewolves
