Tempe  Tempers @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview:  Tempe heads into Bethesda giving the real starting rotation a break as the Bandicoots try and take advantage of the Tempers contempt for their bats against a flotilla of AAA starting pitchers. With the gods smiling brightly on Tempe throughout the current season (or are they getting their help from somewhere more fiery?) we head into the series braced for pretty much anything.
Game #1:  Bethesda outhits the dopey Tempers but one player – Adrian Beltre – was awake enough to handle the entire Bandicoots roster as the veteran 3rd baseman slugged a pair of homers off Miguel Gonzalez in a 2-1 Tempe win. Tempe starter Hisanori Iwakuma improved to 3-0 by allowing just one run – on an Adrian Gonzalez single in the 1st inning. Miggy fell to 1-3 but actually pitched well to everyone other than Beltre allowing just two hits to the rest of the Tempe lineup in seven innings. A disturbing trend began in the game with two Bethesda runners on separate plays overrunning a base and getting gunned down. Hmmm.
Game #2:  All Bethesda as they give Rich Hill (9-0) way more offense than he needed in a 9-1 stomping of Hector Santiago and company. A sloppy game on both sides with Chris Davis dropping an easy fly ball and Troy Tulowitzki screwing up a double play for Tempe and on the Bethesda side Lorenzo Cain overthrew the cutoff man but not the hotdog vendor with Aledmys Diaz adding a couple of nifty bobble plays of his own. Brad Miller smashed a grand slam in the 1st inning off Santiago with Diaz and newly acquired Logan Morrison also going yard for the Bandicoots. Once again, this time Lorenzo Cain got nailed trying to advance an extra base on his own after one of the Tempe errors.
Game #3:  Brett (Super Itchy) Anderson was uber solid in a spot start allowing just two runs – one earned – over 7+ innings in an easy 6-2 Tempe win. Chris Davis and Robinson Cano homered for Tempe. Justin Nicolino got bumped around allowing 11 hits in eight innings for Bethesda to fall to 2-3 as he scrambled late in the season for some reason to get enough usage in to not become a free agent … as if that would be so bad. In this one the baseball gods chose to smile on Melky Cabrera as he nailed Brad Miller at 1st base with a great throw on what should have been a single. Go figure.
Game #4:  Bethesda outhits Tempe 15-11 but falls 6-3 with just a little more help from the baseball gods and some really well played smallball by the Tempers. The Tempers scored twice in the game on sacrifice flies and were perfect in advancing the runners on bunts (Matt Cain) and if that was not enough two rallies in consecutive innings (5th and 6th) were snuffed out by outfield throws by Chris Davis and Colby Rasmus when Bethesda runners ignored the 3rd base coach and went on their own to try and score only to be gunned down at the plate. Nice. Fate is a fickle thing. Davis, Troy Tulowitzki, Adrian Beltre and Evan Gattis each had two hits for Tempe. Brad Miller, Robert Andino and Eric Fryer (no those are not typos) each had three hits for Bethesda. Doug Fister took the loss after losing his mojo (six runs on 10 hits in six innings) to fall to 7-8 while Jim Johnson tossed three shutout innings to close out the game and earn the save for Tempe.
Game #5:  Oh c’mon.
Brad Miller futzed up twice leading to big Tempe rallies as the Tempers smacked the Bandicoots upside the head 9-3 in what turned out to be a homerfest. Normally stingy with allowing hits John Lackey gave us a glimpse of how crappy he will be next season by allowing three homers (seven runs – five earned) in just two innings with Joey Votto, Adrian Beltre and Robinson Cano making him their bitch. Evan Gattis then got into the act homering off relievers Erasmo Ramirez in the 3rd and Fernando Salas in the 6th. In an ironic twise, Bethesda outhit Tempe 9-8 in the contest. For the second straight contest Colby Rasmus got an outfield assist throwing out Travis Shaw after he took too big a turn around 3rd base and dove back a little too slowly. The gods would not be denied I guess.
Game #6:  Ryan Madson showed why he should be run over by the team bus or used as platypus food as he coughed up a three-run homer to Evan Gattis in the top of the 9th to send the game into extra innings tied 6-6. Frig I hate that guy … Madson I mean. Yoenis Cespedes then led off the top of the 11th with a drive into the left field cheap seats off Chris Withrow to give Tempe a 7-6 edge. Tempe reliever Nick Vincent was in a world of trouble all through the bottom of the 11th loading the bases with a couple of walks and a hit but got bailed out big time by the defence that gunned down first Travis Shaw and then Robert Andino at the plate on infield grounders by Eric Fryer and Lorenzo Cain. With two outs and the bases still loaded, David Peralta golfed Vincent’s offering into the left field gap scoring Brad Miller and Fryer to end it with a dramatic 8-7 walkoff. Kind of a shame as we deserved to lose after blowing a 6-2 lead with Madson crapping the bed and then getting thrown out at home twice with the bases loaded, but we’ll take the win. Adrian Beltre also homered for Tempe. Peralta doubled and tripled to drive in three for the home team.
Series Summary:  Tempe’s nowhere near best still managed to take four of six against Bethesda’s near best in their march to the post-season (see godzilla vs small Japanese village).

Valdosta  Snappers @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  NL Central showdown between 2nd place Columbus and 3rd place Valdosta – neither one with a chance to catch the runaway freight train Tempe Tempers who are on a pace to win more than 130 games this year.
Game #1:  Julio Teheran and Lance McCullers were in a good showdown, in fact McCullers fanned the first six outs he got in the game (10 in all with no walks). However, the Snappers snapped the scoreless streak in the 4th and then got single runs in each inning from the 4th through the 8th to take away a 5-1 win in the opener. Chris Carter (45) and Miguel Sano (15) homered and Ender Inciarte laced 3 singles (and stole two bases).
