Tempe  Tempers @ Windy City  Black Sox

Series Preview:  The unstoppable Tempers storm into the Windy City winners of six straight and nine of their last 10. The Sox have been doing ok themselves, winners of seven of ten.
Game #1:  Tempe plates two in the first off Samardzjia.

Iwakuma has the luck going early as he gets double plays to end the 1st and 3rd with multiple runners in scoring position.

Chris Davis adds a run with a solo shot in the 4th. Sox get a pair back in the bottom of the inning on an Alexei Ramirez single.

Gardner ties it up with a solo shot off Law in the 7th.

Sox take the lead when Ramirez delivers again, this time with two outs in the 8th to make it 5-3. Hembree gets em in order in the 9th and the Black Sox snap the Tempers winning stream with a 5-3 win.

Game #2:  Tempe gets a run in the 2nd off Bettis but has one thrown out at the plate by Gardner to end the inning. They add another single run in the 3rd and two more unearned runs in the 4th. Beltre goes yard in the 5th to make it 5-0.

Black Sox hitless into the 7th when Nolan Arenado breaks up the no-no with a solo homer. Tempers get it right back in the 8th though and that’s how it ends. Sox can only manage the one hit for the game.

Tempe 6 Windy City 1

Game #3:  Tempe strikes first again with a pair in the top of the first. Gio Gonzalez walks two in the inning, including walking in a run. Sox get one back in the bottom of the inning as Arenado doubles in Gardner.

It starts to get away from the home team in the 5th when homers from Votto and Cespedes make it 5-1. Votto goes deep again in the 6th to make it 7-1.

It’s 9-1 when the Sox score three meaningless runs in the 8th.

Tempe 9 Windy City 4

Game #4:  Sox waste scoring opportunities in the first and second, allowing Tempe to once again take the early lead with a run in the third. Tempers add two more in the 6th, including a Cespedes solo shot.

Sox finally get on the board in the 7th with a pair of runs but have a runner cut down on the bases to end the inning. 3-2 after seven. Sox strand the tying run at third in the 8th and Law gets McCann to bounce into a double play in the 9th to end it.

Tempe 3 Windy City 2

Game #5:  Home side actually on the board first in this one as Brandon Belt hits a bases clearly double in the top of the 1st.

Guerra yanked for a pinch hitter in the 3rd and it nearly pays off but Peavy induces the twin killing with the bases packed to end the threat.

Peavy then settles down and tosses 7 scoreless frames before being lifted for a pinch hitter. Hembree then loads the bases with one out. Cespedes flies to left and Beltran cuts down Votto tagging on the play. It’s the third inning ending double play with the bases loaded for the Black Sox.

Jansen shuts the door 1-2-3 in the 9th for the save.

Windy City 3 Tempe 0

Game #6:  Votto leads off the game with a homer against Samardzija. In the bottom of the inning Rasmus makes a catch while slamming into the wall and is lost for 14 days. Meanwhile Carlos Beltran goes yard with a man on later in the inning. 2-1 after the first.

Once again early hook from Tempe’s manager as Iwakuma is lifted for a pinch hitter in the 2nd inning.

In the third its Robinson Cano belting a deep homer with a man aboard to give the Tempers a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth its Rasmus’ replacement danDekker getting plunked and leaving the game. Meanwhile the Tempers load the bases with no outs, Shark gets the next two hitters but then comes unraveled. Tempe plates four to take a 7-2 lead. Only three of those seven runs are earned thanks to a pair of Sox errors.

More Tempe runs when Beltran and Utley collide and are both knocked out of the game. Sox score 4 in the 8th, including a three run shot from Arenado to draw to within three at 10-7. But Law shuts the door in the 9th.

Tempe 10 Windy City 7

Series Summary:  Tempe takes the series 4-2 as the Sox blow a chance to get a split in the final game with some sloppy play. A moral victory for the home team though as they manage to hang in there against the best team in the league.
