Triple Creek  Patriots @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  Triple Creek and Columbus do a replay from last series 3-3 split. The two team come in with nearly identical records (53-31 for TCP, 52-32 for COL). Both team find themselves in 2nd place in their divisions – Columbus 17 games back of the Evil Empire (Tempe) and the Patriots looking up at Sacramento from an 8 game deficit.
Game #1:  The game was scoreless through 6 as Kendall Graveman and Matt Shoemaker were tossing bullets. The Stephen Piscotty broke the stalemate with a solo blast (12) in the 7th. However, not to be outdone, the Explorers tie it up in the bottom half on a Jose Iglesias rbi single. The Tyler Flowers comes in to PH for Shoemaker and hits a 2 run homer (3) to make it 3-1. Columbus then adds an extra insurance run in the 8th and in the 9th Triple Creek made it exciting. Blaine Hardy, in for some work, gives up walk and single. Tony Watson comes on and gets 1 out but gives up a hit, Luis Sardinas rbi single. Rodriguez then comes in, gives up a hit, but gets the final 2 outs to preserve a 4-2 Columbus win.
TCP 2- 6-0 LP Kendall Graveman (8-4)
COL 4-11-1 WP Matt Shoemaker (9-2) S Francisco Rodriguez
Game #2:  This one was wild an woolly. 2 outs top of the 1st Corey Seager draws a walk. Piscotty follows with a single. Trayce Thompson then blasts a 3 run homer (4). Mac Williamson follows with a solo shot (2) to make it 4-0. Wade LeBlanc is not too happy. However, Kevin Gausman fares worse in his half as the Explorers tee off for 5 runs keyed by a 2 run rbi single from Andy Romine in his 1st at bat after spending time on the DL. Chase Headley then hits a 2 out solo homer (11) in the 2nd to tie it at 5-5 but Curtis Granderson (16) matches his feat in the bottom half and Columbus goes back up 6-5. Several pitchers later (for both teams) and we reach the 7th. Twice in this inning Triple Creek batters strike out but reach 1st base! Ouch. After the 1st one, Corey Seager doubles in 2 runs giving the Patriots a 7-6 lead. Then Tyler Flowers drops fair pop by Trayce Thompson. Kojo Uehara comes in and he gives up SF to Mac Williamson and it’s 8-6 the Creek. Marwin Gonzalez then fans, but reaches 1st on Flowers 2nd passed ball of the inning (to go along with his error), but no more runs score. Dan Jennings takes the hill for the Patriots in the 7th he faces 8 batters. He walks 3 and gives up 2 hits and 4 runs and the Explorers retake the lead 10-8. Jake Barrett, Francisco Rodriguez and Tony Watson are able to keep it that way in the 8th and 9th.
TCP 8-12-2 LP Jennings (2-2), BS Jennings (3)
COL 10-11-1 WP Uehara, BS David Robertson (1), S Watson (12)
Game #3:  Game 3 proves that the Explorers won’t sweep this week. Alex Wood and Josh Tomlin are very sharp through 6. Wood exits in the 7th for a PHitter and leaves giving up 4 hits and fanning 10 and no runs. Good choice to PH for him as Albert Almora singles, and later scores along with 4 other Patriots, Corey Seager driving in 2 of the 5 Triple Creek runs in the 7th. Lonnie Chisenhall and Caleb Joseph get 2 hits each. Columbus tripes to mount rallies in the 7th (1 run) and the 8 (2 run Matt Carpenter homer [16] but they keep leaving guys out there as the Patriot bullpen gets the job done. Wood wins the game and that keeps his record perfect!
TCP 5-10-0 WP Wood (10-0) S Addison Reed (17)
COL 3- 8-0 LP Tomlin (8-6)
Game #4:  Columbus gets a CG from J.A. Happ, but will it be enough for a win? Marwin Gonzalez hits an rbi triple in the 2nd but tries to score and he’s out, 1-0 Triple Creek. Eduardo Nunez hits a 2 run double in the 4th to give Happ and Columbus a 2-1 lead. But the lead evaporates in the 6th when Piscotty cracks an rbi single to tie it up. Starter Cotton pitches through 6 but leaves with a No Decision.
Bottom of the 9th, Addison Reed in for Triple Creek. Nunez leads off with a walk and steals 2nd. Tyler Flowers fans. Curtis Granderson gets the IW, Jose Iglesias up, the double steal, both are safe. Iglesais then is given an IW. Alex Avila comes in to PH for Happ and after taking a ball, he cranks one to straightaway CF that is plenty to score Nunez as Flowers gets the walk-off SF.
TCP 2-6-1 LP Reed (3-2)
COL 3-6-0 WP Happ (9-5)
Game #5:  We see this game ending with the same 3-2 score, but who has the 3? Columbus gets unearned runs in the both the 1st and 2nd innings as the Patriots commit 2 or their 4 errors in the game – starter Nick Tropeano gets 2 of those 4. He also goes 6 innings giving up 3 hits and just those 2 unearned runs while fanning 7. His counterpart Chris Rusin goes 5.1 giving up 5 hits 1 run while fanning 6. The one run was a solo shot from Chase Headley (12) in the 6th. Koji Uehara is in in the 7th he gives up a lead-off single to Mac Williamson. Blaine Hardy comes in to pitch, Luis Sardinas comes in to run. He quickly exercises his legs on an rbi double from Marwin Gonzalez and there is a blown save and a tie game. Goes that way until the top of the 8th when Trayce Thompson singles and later scores on a Gonzalez single (his 2nd rbi of the game). Proves to be the game winner as Neftali Feliz blanks the home team in the 8th and Addison Reed locks it down in the 9th. Patriots survive 4 errors.
TCP 3-9-4 WP Dan Jennings (3-2) S Reed (18)
COL 2-3-0 LP Tony Watson (1-2) BS Hardy (1)
Game #6:  Columbus has 3-2 lead as we go to the finale, will it be another split week like last week? Kendall Graveman vs. Matt Shoemaker – repeat from game 1. Patriots hope so and they start out fast with 3 runs in the 1st keyed by a 2 out 2 run triple from Mitch Moreland. Columbus chips away for 1 in the 2nd on an rbi groundout from Curtis Granderson. Ian Desmond makes it 3-2 Patriots when he singles in a run in the 4th. Explorers then tie it up in the 6th when Tyler Flowers bounces the 3rd out to Graveman but he throws it past Moreland at 1st and the tying run scores.
But you Patriots fans, hold on to your seats. – Top of the 8th. Lonnie Chisenhall leads off with a double. Koji Uehara comes in to pitch. With one out, Chase Headley singles him to 3rd. Moreland up and Uehara flings a WP score Chisenhall and Headley moves to 3rd, 4-3 Triple Creek. Moreland then lines one over Dee Gordon for his 3 rbi of the game and 5-3 Triple Creek lead. Strahm, who closed out the 7th, stays pitches a perfect 8th but leaves a PH in the 9th. Neftali Feliz is called on to close out the 9th. Tyler Flowers flies out. Jose Iglesais then watches as ball four crosses the plate – no one knows how he held up, it looked real good, but ump called it ball four. Feliz then walks Shin-Soo Choo. Charlie Blackmon, the winning run, steps to the plate. Feliz looking in, and swallowing hard, but he drops an off-speed pitch that was low and away, but Blackmon was fooled and fans for the 2nd out. Dee Gordon comes up and rips one hard to straightaway CF, Chisenhall races in and dives but it bounces off his chest but he kept it in front of him which only allowed one run to score so the Patriots still have the lead 5-4 with 2 outs and runners on the corners. Miller walks to the mound and asks Feliz for the ball and signals to the bullpen for Joakim Soria. He just has one out to get and he’s coming in to face Matt Carpenter. Carpenter has had a decent day, a walk, a double and 2 runs scored in 4 plate appearances. Soria is ready, he delivers and boy, howdy, does Carpenter deliver. He crushes one long and hard and did I say long, it cleared the RF fences before all the boarding passes were checked it’s still out there somewhere, but he gets a 3 run walk-off homer (17) and the Explorers steal one from the claws of defeat as they win 7-5.
TCP 5-10-2 LP Feliz (3-2) BS Soria (1)
COL 7- 8-1 WP Francisco Rodriguez (3-1)
Series Summary:  That game 6 end is one of the reasons we play this game. Columbus pulls out a 4-2 series win that could easily have been just the opposite as these teams are pretty evenly matched as their record indicate. Columbus stays home to host Rosemere and Triple Creek returns home to host Long Beach.

Sacramento  Capitals @ Jersey  Nor’easters

Series Preview:  In the second leg of a home and home series with Sacramento the Nor’easters play host to the Capitals.

Game #3:  Again with the heartbreaking heroics. Sacramento scores 2 in the 9th and hands the Nor’easters a 4-2 loss.
Game #4:  Sacramento scores early and often pounding the Nor’easters 16-3. G. Stanton has 4 hits and 7 RBI for the Capitals.

Southbend  Lynx @ Dallas  Cougars

Series Preview:  Southbend travels to Dallas to begin the 2nd half of the season.
Neither team is good enough to think about the playoffs and neither is bad enough to think about the lottery.
Game #1:  A.J. Pollock singles home two runs in the 7th while Dallas Keuchel goes 7 plus strong innings.
Dallas 3, Southbend 1
Game #2:  3 hit shutout by Mike Bolsinger and Jeurys Familia. Jose Altuve went 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and a home run. Lynx even the series.

Game #3:  Almost a carbon copy of the previous game, but this time the Cougars manage to score a run. Jose Altuve goes 3 for 5 to raise his average to .372.
Southbend 5, Dallas 1
Game #4:  After Archie Bradley walked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th Geovany Soto bailed him out in the top of the 7th as he pinch hit for Coco Crisp, “The runners take their lead … the pitch … SOTO puts a charge into this one a big fly to deep left … BOURN will run out of room … that’s a Baltimore special a three-run homer … SOTO will touch all the bases … and he’s sure taking his time he’s greeted at home plate … congratulations all around”
Southbend 5, Dallas 3
Game #5:  Walk off 2 run homer in the bottom of the 10th by Gregory Polanco gives Dallas the win.
Dallas 7, Southbend 5
Game #6:  Dallas Keuchel was cruising until the 6th inning when he gave up 6 runs – the big blow another 3 run pinch hit homer by Geovany Soto then Tom Wilhelmsen pitches like he was pitching batting practice in the 8th as the Lynx route the Cougars.
Southbend 14, Dallas 5

Southbend takes the series 4 games to 2.

Game #1:  The visitors puts 8 in T1 ad never looked back. 10-2
Game #2:  This time around the local provided much better opposition. Scoreless after 9, both team plated one in the 10th. Corktown puts two on the board in T14 and Rosemere can answer it. 3-1

Hollywood  Werewolves @ Detroit  Crime

Series Summary:  Series Split. Rain shortened game oddity in game 6. Commissioners Office ruled it a complete game since it passed the ‘official’ game mark.

Manhattan  Project @ Mesa  Solar Sox

Series Preview:  Manhattan and Mesa boast impressive lineups. Let’s see if the offense dominates.
Game #1:  Mesa’s Aaron Blair goes the distance…..and gives up 23 hits and 14 runs. He needed the work. They scored 7 in the 1st and never looked back. Freeman and Realmuto homered.
Game #2:  Seager, Ramos, and Holliday homer for the Project as they pound out 18 more hits and win 11-0. Tanaka gives up 4 hits in 8 innings.
Game #3:  Mesa’s turn for some 1st inning offense off Drew Pomeranz. 5 runs, including a Yan Gomes homer gets it started and Mesa wins 8-4. Rookie Michal Fulmer wins his 5th.
Game #4:  Manhattan scores 5 times n the 1st off Ian Kennedy (that’s 12 1st inning runs in the 1st 4 games). 4 of the runs were unearned as the Mesa infield commits 3 errors (Alonzo 1b, Dozier 2b, and Anderson ss. Only Frazier at third stayed clean). The Project, however could not hold the lead as Eddie Roasario blasts two 3 run homers to lead the Sox to a come from behind 9-6 win.
Game #5:  Manhattan did not score in the 1st, but they scored at least one run in the next 5 innings and win 9-4. Bad news for the Project, however, as Matt Holliday was injured and is out for the next 25 games.
Game #6:  David Phelps gives the Solar Sox the series split by pitching the game of his life, a complete game 5 hit shutout, walking one and striking out 13!!
Series Summary:  A surprising series split as after the 1st two games Mesa played with verve and spirit! Just like them Durham Bulls.

VIR heads to Texas to take on Dallas while CCC goes to Detroit to face the Crime.

Selkirk  Steelers @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview:  Selkirk and Bethesda meet to complete their back-to-back series with the venue swinging to the East Coast. Last series was marked by a near complete offensive wasteland and the teams hoped to break out of their hitting slumps.
Game #1:  No breaks in hitting slumps here as the game was decided in the 1st inning with Jon Jay racing home on a slow dribbler up the middle as the Bandicoots emerged just far enough out of the offensive mire to win the series opener 1-0.
Mike Wright went 7+ strong for Selkirk allowing just the lone run on six hits and three walks. He fanned six. On the Bethesda side, Doug Fister continued to overachieve going 7.1 shutout innings and allowing six hits and three walks as well to go with 7 Ks.
BJ Upton or whatever he is calling himself these days had a couple of hits including a double for the Steelers and Adrian Gonzalez had three hits for Bethesda.
FINAL – Bethesda 1, Selkirk 0
Win-Fister (6-2) Sv-Cishek (20) Loss-Wright (3-11)
HR-none
Game #2:  The drought continued for Selkirk at the hands of a John Lackey who three-hit the Steelers in an eventual 2-0 Bethesda win.
Anthony Rendon continued to be one of the few good hitters against the Steelers bashing his 13th homer of the season off starter Kyle Gibson in the 6th inning with Adrian Gonzalez aboard.
Gibson was otherwise pristine working seven innings and allowing just six hits and striking out the same number.
Lackey gave up two walks and struck out seven.
FINAL – Bethesda 2, Selkirk 0
Win-Lackey (8-3) Loss-Gibson (4-12)
HR-BET: Rendon (13)
Game #3:  Selkirk sets a dangerous precedence in the series in that they scored and they won.
Matt Adams homered and BJ Upton drove in two runs with a triple to put the Steelers ahead to stay in the 5th inning as they went on the derail the Bandicoots 3-1.
Bud Norris left the game early after taking a pitch from Jake Odorizzi high in the ribs and getting knocked out of action for about a week. Norris left after giving up one run on an RBI double by Adrian Gonzalez that gave Bethesda the lead in the 1st inning.
The Selkirk bullpen allowed just one hit and one walk over five innings to preserve the win which wound up in the hands of JC Ramirez after he tossed two hitless innings.
The Bandicoots could manage only four hits in the game which featured a rare good performance by Derek Norris behind the plate … he threw out two of three would-be basestealers (Steven Souza Jr. and Starlin Castro) with only Tony Wolters managing to advance.
FINAL – Selkirk 3, Bethesda 1
Win-Ramirez (1-2) Sv-Neris (14) Loss-Odorizzi (5-6)
HR-SEL: Adams (8)
Game #4:  It was a case of death by tater as the Bandicoots out-homered the Steelers 2-1 to win 3-1.
Jake Arrieta went the distance for Bethesda allowing only five hits and a walk while striking out eight.
FINAL – Bethesda 3, Selkirk 1
Win-Arrieta (11-1) Loss-Suarez (1-2)
HR-SEL: Adams (9); BET: Rendon (14), Drew (3)
Game #5:  Miguel Gonzalez bungled his way through much of the first half of the season, but had it all going on this day as he allowed just five hits and fanned eight in a shuout of the Steelers 2-0.
Zach Davies pitched almost as well as Miggy (two runs on six hits and 8 Ks in 7 IP), but a couple of costly pitches (solo homer to Adrian Gonzalez in the 7th and RBI double to Aledmys Diaz in the 3rd) made the difference.
Former Bandicoot Cheslor Cuthbert had a pair of hits including his 17th double for Selkirk.
FINAL – Bethesda 2, Selkirk 0
Win-M.Gonzalez (1-1) Loss-Davies (4-11)
HR-BET: A.Gonzalez (12)
Game #6:  In the series’ only game with any signs of offensive life, Bethesda manages to score four runs in the 5th inning off Mike Wright to break open a 2-2 tie and take the game 6-2.
Anthony Rendon had 3 hits for Bethesda and Starlin Castro had two for Selkirk including a double.
FINAL – Bethesda 6, Selkirk 2
Win-Fister (7-2) Loss-Wright (3-12)
HR-SEL: Murphy (5); BET: Miller (23)
Series Summary:  Bethesda outscored Selkirk 15-6 in the series to come away with five of six games which could have gone to pretty much either team as hitting was hard to come by on either side. A great series for pitchers on both sides.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Motor City  Muscle

Series Summary:  The teams split the games.

Long Beach  Dirt Bags @ Tempe  Tempers

Series Preview:  Long Beach visits Tempe for six games.
Game #1:  Jon Lester gets the win throwing a complete game. Joey Votto and Ryan Braun go deep.

Tempe 3-0
Game #3:  J.J. Hardy solo shot in the top of the 9th tied up the game, but Joey Votto came through with a walk off RBI single in the bottom half.
Tempe 4-3
Game #4:  Evan Gattis two run hr in the bottom of the 9th tied the game at 3-3. Backup catcher Ramon Cabrera gets his first plate appearance of the season with bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th and delivers a game winning single.
Tempe 4-3
Game #5:  Evan Gattis and Colby Rasumus homer and Davis homers twice.
Tempe 8-2
Game #6:  Luis Valbuena homers twice as Long Beach gets paypack on Johnny Cueto and avoids the sweep.
Long Beach 5-3
Series Summary: The two walks that were won by Tempe made it a one sided series, but only one game was decided by more than 3 runs.

Windy City Black Sox @ Grand Haven Gators

Series Summary:  The home town Gators take 4 of 6 from the Black Sox.
