Sacramento  Capitals @ Windy City  Black Sox

Game #1:  Caps jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first as the threaten to chase Harvey early. But he settles down and is able to make it through 6 innings. Meanwhile the Sox plate single runs in the third, sixth, and seventh to tie the game.

The Sox bullpen locks it down for the win.

The teams exchange runs in the 7th but the Sox take the lead in the 8th when a really wild pitch allows Saunders to go from first to third and score on Arenado’s bloop single. But Jansen cant hold the lead as Ramiro Pena plates Pujols from 2nd with two outs on a pinch hit single. We go to extras.

In the 13th the Caps get a gift run as Gardner drops a Pence fly ball and Pence ends up at third to start the inning. After a pop out the squeeze gets a run in when Arenado fumbles the bunt and has only the play at first. Melancon gets another save with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning.

Final Score: Mesa 7, Dallas 3

Through the first 5 games Dallas hit .255, but low offensive output in the finale saw their series average drop to .241. They also hit 13 doubles, 1 triple, and 5 home runs – 4 of which came from Abreu and Gyorko.

Valdosta  Snappers @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Preview:  Teams with opposite records (Valdosta 24-35 Triple Creek 35-24) meet for a 7 set.
Game #1:  Wisler and Gausman both depart in the 6th with a 3-3 tie. Battle of the bullpens goes to Triple Creek. Snappers score 1 in the 8th to take the lead but Kimbrel and Ross give up runs in the 8th and 9th to blow it.

VS 4 TCP 5

W – Jennings (2)
L – Kimbrell

Game #2:  Snappers destroy crush Alex Meyer for 8 runs in 3 innings. The Patriot cauterizes the wound and allows nothing the last 6 innings. Down 8-0 after the Snappers bat in the 4th, Triple Creek could have just made some tee-times, but instead they score 3 in the bottom half of the 4th. The add 1 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th to tie it up 8-8 heading into the 8th. Kimbrel takes the hill and implodes, allowing 2 doubles and a homer, on his to allowing 3 runs to score and his 2nd loss of the series. Patriots pound out 10 XB hits.

VS 8 TCP 11

W – Logan (2)
L – Kimbrell

Game #3:  Patriot bats continue to be hot as they pile up 6 more XB hits and chase Teheran after 3.1 innings. Snapper pen pitched well today but the Valdosta offense was stifled by A.J. Griffins 6 hit performance over 8 innings.

VS 1 TCP 8

W – Griffin (1)
L – Teheran (5)

Game #4:  Back and forth battle chews up pitchers on both sides until it’s 8-8 again after 8 innings. Vizcaino is called upon with the bases loaded in the 9th and he promptly allows the Patriots to walk-off on a walk.

VS 8 TCP 9

W – Reed (2)
L – Vizcaino (1)

Game #5:  2-2 after regulation. Triple Creek calls upon Boone Logan to toss 2 innings today and that was a mistake. In the 11th he allows 3 runs to put the home squad in a hole 5-2. Who will Valdosta skipper Hernandez call? It’s Kimbrell, again. Kimbrell tasted like chicken the 1st two games and the Patriot dugout all leap to the fence in excitement as he trots in. Kimbrell does record an out, unfortunately the pales to the 5-spot that gets hung on him. He just didn’t have anything on his pitches.

VS 5 TCP 7

W – Logan (3)
L – Kimbrell (3)

Game #6:  Wisler scatters 16 base runners over 6 frames but leaves down just 4-2. Snappers would add another but come up just short.

VS 3 TCP 4

W – Gausman (5)
L – Wisler (8)
S – Broxton (1)

Game #7:  Valdosta cruises to an easy victory to help ease the pain of the previous 5. McHugh goes the distance while striking out 9 and walking just 1.

VS 6 TCP 1

W – McHugh (3)
L – Meyer (1)

Series Summary:  Triple Creek would not roll over and made up almost every deficit they had the whole series. Patriots take 6 of 7 from the Snappers.

Game #6:  Game Final: CRK 12 – GHG 1
Game #7:  Game Final: CRK 7 – GHG 3

Southbend  Lynx @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview:  Southbend visits Virginia in a battle of teams trying not to lose 100 games.
Game #1:  VIR 13-9
A 6 run 2nd catapults VIR to a lead that Southbend can’t catch up to. For VIR, Markakis rips 3 hits and knocks in 3 runs and Rizzo and E.Carrera go deep. Forsythe leaves the yard twice for Southbend and has 6 RBI.
Game #2:  SBL 14-9
Matt Joyce is a beast,…6-6, 5 runs, 6 RBI and he clubs 2 homers as well as hits for the cycle. Altuve chips in with a 3-6, 4 RBI day with a homer. G.Springer had 2 long balls in a 2-5, 4 RBI day for VIR.
Game #3:  SBL 6-1
M.Canha’s 1st inning Grand Slam gave SBL all they would need to win as D.Holland threw a CG 5-hitter.
Game #4:  VIR 11-3
Markakis left the yard twice and collected 5 RBI and Segura and Springer combined for 5 hits and 4 RBI to lead VIR. Perdomo evened his record at 4-4 as he K’d 10.
Game #5:  SBL 6-2
C.Crisp doubled up on home runs and drove in 5 as A.Bradley went the distance and K’d 10 to win his 4th game against 4 losses. Homers by Springer and N.Walker accounted for all VIR runs.
Game #6:  SBL 4-2
A 3 run 4th highlighted by Altuve’s 2-run blast gave SBL enough to give Niese his 2nd win of the season.
Game #7:  SBL 5-2
Forsythe, Trumbo, and Soto combined to give SBL a 4 run cushion in the 3rd and SBL rode the arm of A.Cole to its 5th victory of the series.
Series Summary:  SBL takes the series 5-2 and pulls into a tie with VIR.

Markakis .333 10-30, 5 runs, 8 RBI, 2 homers

Columbus  Explorers @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview:  Two teams with nearly identical records meet up with both Bethesda and Columbus on a nice winning run taking 8 of their last 10.
Game #1:  NOTHING PRETTY ABOUT THIS ONE …
The Sonny Gray mystique went up in a cloud of smoke big time with the Explorers jumping all over him for seven hits and a 5-0 lead after just two innings.
Lance McCullers meanwhile on the mound for Columbus put things in cruise control and promptly drove his team bus off a cliff. Lancelot did manage to stick around for 10 outs, but in doing so allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks. My sympathies go out to Columbus management as I have seen McCullers do the same thing for me all season in the other league I am in.
Bethesda scored four times in the bottom of the 2nd to make it a close 5-4 game and then added a run in the 3rd to tie it. Curtis Granderson smacked an RBI triple in the top of the 4th to give Columbus the lead temporarily but then Bethesda countered in its half of the inning with two runs off a ground-rule double by Trevor Story.
It stayed 7-6 until the bottom of the 8th when Story connected a little more solidly on a hanging curve by Tony Watson to close things out 9-6.
Charlie Blackmon continued his insane attack on MWBL pitching raising his average to .376 going 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI to give him 37 on the season and Ian Desmond went 2/5 for Columbus adding a couple of RBIs to give him 43 this year.
Story was 3/5 for Bethesda, scoring and driving in three with Stephen Drew doing nicely as a pinchhitter – smacking a rocket over the centrefield wall with a couple of men on in the 2nd inning.
FINAL – BETHESDA 9, COLUMBUS 6
W-J.Gant (2-0) S-F.Salas (1) L-L.McCullers (2-2)
HR-COL: none; BET: T.Story (15), S.Drew (2)
Game #2:  ACE IN THE HOLE
Lorenzo Cain provided all of the offense in this game with a rare display of power with a homer off Columbus’s Josh Tomlin and Jake Arrieta provided the arm tossing a two-hitter in the Bandicoots 2-0 win.
Tomlin was no slouch himself allowing just five hits in the game although three of them went for extra bases and showed great control striking out five while walking none.
Wiffle-bat Eric Fryer had two hits for Bethesda.
FINAL – BETHESDA 2, COLUMBUS 0
W-J.Arrieta (8-0) L-J.Tomlin (7-3)
HR-COL: none; BET: L.Cain (2)
Game #3:  THANK YOU SIR – MAY I HAVE ANOTHER?
Lorenzo Cain continued where he left off in Game #2, hammering Matt Shoemaker’s first pitch over the left field wall to give Bethesda all it needed as three pitchers combined for a 4-hit shutout of the Explorers 2-0.
Eduardo Nunez wasted a 3/4 performance for Columbus with Charlie Blackmon (of course) getting the only other hit.
Trevor Story was 3/4 for Bethesda and drove in the other run.
Adrian Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 14 games by getting Bethesda’s final hit of the game – a single in the 7th – and Brock Holt started his own hitting streak for Columbus … getting hit by the ball that is. Holt, who was brought in in the 8th to pinch hit for Mark Reynolds, was knocked out for 11 days by Jake Odorizzi in what wound up being Odorizzi’s last pitch of the game. Odorizzi had opened the inning by walking Russell Martin before plunking Holt in the melon. Odorizzi left striking out 10 and allowing just three hits in seven innings.
One of the team’s only lefties Rich Hill was brought in with none out and runners on 1st and 2nd in the 8th and managed to get two outs although the runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by pinchhitter Shin-Soo Choo. Steve Cishek relieved Hill to face righty power-hitting catcher Tyler Flowers and struck him out swinging to end the inning. Cishek gave up a double to Nunez in the 9th but that was it as he preserved the shutout win for the Bandicoots.
Shoemaker had a very solid game for Columbus. He pitched 6.2 innings allowing just one earned run and struck out 10.
FINAL – BETHESDA 2, COLUMBUS 0
W-J.Odorizzi (3-3) S-S.Cishek (13) L-M.Shoemaker (6-2)
HR-COL: none; BET: L.Cain (3)
Game #4:  KING OF THE HILL
Former Bethesda shortstop Jose Iglesias ended the Columbus scoring drought at 27 innings with an RBI groundout in the 5th, but that’s all that the Explorers would get as Rich Hill dominated allowing just a pair of hits in Bethesda’s 4-1 win.
Iggy’s groundout broke a 0-0 deadlock in a masterful pitching display by Hill and Columbus starter Ervin Santana. Santana had a no-hitter going until two out in the 5th when Travis Shaw golfed a ball off the right field wall. The shutout disappeared the next batter when Derek Norris dribbled a ball up and through the middle of the infield to tie the game 1-1. Norris must have been pretty happy with himself cuz as he was taking a bow he got picked off by Santana and then lost his shit at the umpire and got tossed for his creative use of the word “insertion”.
Santana’s troubles carried into the next inning when with two outs Tyler Naquin launched one into the right field bleachers to make it 3-1 for Bethesda.
Bethesda added another run on a lousy throw by Eduardo Nunez that allowed Robert Andino to score from 2nd base.
John Gant was brought in for Bethesda with a 3-run lead in the 9th but couldn’t make it through the inning allowing a couple of hits to Charlie Blackmon and Matt Carpenter. Steve Cishek came in to face Ian Desmond and got him to fly out to the warning track to end the threat and the game.
FINAL – BETHESDA 4, COLUMBUS 1
W-R.Hill (6-0) S-S.Cishek (14) L-E.Santana (5-4)
HR-COL: none; BET: T.Naquin (8)
Game #5:  BETTER TO BE LUCKY THAN GOOD
Doug Fister scattered six hits and somehow managed to plod his way through the entire game as Bethesda blanked Columbus for the third time in the series 6-0.
Pitching way over his head and only enough to get chew his way to his minimum innings to avoid free agency, Fister walked just one and never really was in much trouble in the game against the demoralized Explorers.
The demoralization came early in this one as the Columbus ace, JA Happ, crapped the bed in the first inning allowing Bethesda to score four times highlighted by a tape measure blast by Brad Miller with Lorenzo Cain and Trevor Story on base. Happ was shaky from the start of this one allowing back-to-back doubles by Aledmys Diaz and Cain to open the game. Happ was quick to respond to Miller’s homer plonking poor old man Carlos Ruiz in the middle of the back and sending him to the old folks infirmary for 11 days.
Ruiz’s replacement , Derek Norris, had his revenge sending Happ to the showers after doubling in a run early in the 4th. Bethesda added another run in the 7th when Diaz homered off reliever Jake Barrett.
Charlie (Of Course) Blackmon and Jose Iglesias provided the most offensive punch for Columbus with each getting a double.
FINAL – BETHESDA 6, COLUMBUS 1
W-D.Fister (2-1) L-J.Happ (5-5)
HR-COL: none; BET: A.Diaz (10), B.Miller (19)
Game #6:  CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR
Columbus hitters beat up on John Gant late in the game once again, scoring three times as they tried to fight back from a 5-1 deficit, but fell just short after Steve Cishek came in and slammed the door (sort of) to preserve the 5-4 win.
Bethesda opened the 9th with a comfortable lead and Gant cruising along in his 3rd inning of long relief, but the Explorers opened the inning with a couple of hits from Shin-Soo Choo and Eduardo Nunez. Gant struck out Curtis Granderson but the next two hitters (Dee Gordon and Jose Iglesias) each singled bringing home a run. In came Cishek who promptly gave up a double into the right field corner by Russell Martin that scored Gordon easily and sent Iggy to 3rd with just one out and Bethesda leading 5-4 and Charlie Blackmon coming to the plate. Blackmon somehow struck out and Flowers came within 10 feet of clobbering the Explorers’ 1st homer of the series but Brad Miller caught it at the wall to end it.
Gordon led the Explorers’ offense with three hits in four at bats.
FINAL – BETHESDA 5, COLUMBUS 4
W-J.Lackey (6-2) S-S.Cishek (15) L-L.McCullers (2-3)
HR-COL: none; BET: A.Diaz (11)
Game #7:  IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!
The Columbus Explorers’ power failure ended in a big way with Curtis Granderson hitting two of the team’s three home runs as they bashed their way to a 9-6 win over Bethesda.
Granderson’s first inning blast was pretty neat bringing in three runs off Sonny Gray to give Columbus an early lead, but nowhere near as dramatic as his last homer of the game.
Matt Carpenter set the stage for Granderson’s heroics smacking a pinch hit homer off Ryan Madson in the top of the 8th to bring in a pair of runs and tie the game at 6-6. Madson came in trying to extricate Erasmo Ramirez from a jam he had gotten into, but didn’t quite do the job.
Jumbo Diaz was handed the ball in the 9th for Bethesda and appeared on the way to getting out of the inning unscathed when he went a little bonkers and gave up a single to Jose Iglesias and then drifted a slider into Charlie Blackmon’s nether regions. The groin ball resulted in some pain to Blackmon, but he stayed in the game … Diaz got tossed for his attempted castration. Fernando Salas was brought in to face the next hitter, Granderson, and KABLAM … 9-6 Columbus.
Granderson’s six RBIs gave him 37 on the season.
FINAL – COLUMBUS 9, BETHESDA 6
W-F.Rodriguez (2-1) S-T.Watson (10) L-J.Diaz (2-2)
HR-COL: Granderson 2 (12), M.Carpenter (12); BET: T.Story (16)
Series Summary:  Bethesda gets some unexpected good pitching from guys like Doug Fister to take six games before reality set in and the bullpen crapped out and Columbus woke up to take the final game. Warm milk and cookies will continue to be on the visiting teams’ menus when they come to Bethesda.
