Tempe Tempers @ Bethesda Bandicoots | |
---|---|
Series Preview |
The Tempers (103-35) head east to face off against Bethesda (82-56) as both teams head into the home stretch of the 2016 season.
|
Game #1: |
The series opened with a game that was all Andre Ethier and all Sonny Gray as the Bendicoots strung up the Tempers 8-1. Ethier was a nifty 4/4 with two doubles, a homer (#15) and three runs scored while Gray improved to 15-7 on the strength of giving up just a single hit in seven shutout innings. Evan Longoria collected a couple of hits for Tempe and drove in their lone run. Alex Rodriguez (29) and Adrian Gonzalez (28) also homered for Bethesda.
|
Game #2: |
… @$%$#@^%@%#^ … <– about as close as I could come to spelling the noise I made after Tempe starting pitcher Wei Chen and his .083 clubbed his second two-run double of the game that lifted the Tempers to a 6-4 win over Bethesda. Evan Gattis chipped in with a double and a homer – his 17th – for the victors. Third-string Bethesda catcher JP Arencibia was an almost as unlikely 4/4 in the game with a double and a couple of RBIs. Chen’s hitting antics helped him to |
Game #3: |
Jake Arrieta had it and Hisonori Iwakuma didn’t as the Bandicoots came at the Japanese import like King Kong did against Godzilla (in the US version of the movie) knocking him out in two innings in a 5-0 Bethesda shutout. Arrieta went the distance allowing five hits and fanning 6 as he improved to 15-7. Iwakuma fell to 10-5. Andre Ethier (16) and Lorenzo Cain (12) each had two-run homers for Bethesda.
|
Game #4: |
The Bandicoots pummelled Tempe starter Brett Anderson for six extra base hits in the early going, chasing the lefty after two innings as the home team took it easily 8-2. Two of the hits allowed left the park (Slade Heathcott #1, Chris Colabello #13) with Stephen Drew (16) adding another late in the game. Chris Davis began his pitcher munching for Tempe homering off Bethesda starter Jake Odorizzi (12-1) in the 6th. Adrian Gonzalez had three hits for Bethesda.
|
Game #5: |
A fly ball in the gap that rolled to the wall when Yeonis Cespedes and Evan Gattis collided resulted in the only runs of the game as Bethesda shutout Tempe for the second time in the series 2-0. Plucky AP Arencibia was responsible for delivering the two-RBI double and sending the two Tempe outfielders to the showers early with minor injuries. Tempe only managed three hits in the game – all coming off starter Brandon Morrow (2-1). Hector Santiago logged a good 6+ innings giving up just the two runs on five hits and recording six Ks. Rich Hill saved his 18th of the season for Bethesda.
|
Game #6: |
Chris Davis squashed Bethesda’s hopes of taking 5 of 6 from Tempe by smacking two monster homers including the game winner in the top of the 10th to give the Tempers a 5-4 win. Davis shared the credit for the win with the Tempe bullpen tandem of Tyler Clippard and Jeff Manship (5-0) who allowed just one baserunner on a walk to reach in the last four innings of the game. Andre Ethier had another nice game at the plate for Bethesda going 2/4 with a triple, a run and an RBI. With the homers, Davis stood at 38 on the season. Alex Rodriguez poked one out for his 30th for Bethesda.
|
Series Summary |
Tempe hitters other than pitcher Wei Chen and Chris Davis were pretty quiet in the series so Bethesda came out lucky taking it 4-2 with under 20 games to go in the season.
|
Grand Haven Gators @ Sacramento Capitals | |
---|---|
Series Preview |
First place Capitals host the last place Gators, and hope for an easy home stand.
|
Series Summary |
The Capitals take the first four games with ease behind solid pitching and X home runs. But, Grand Haven wasn’t to be toyed with. They then shut out the Capitals for the final two games to make it a 4-2 series.
To put it in context, the Capitals had been shut out 4 times all season. Last place Grand Haven just shut out the Caps two games in a row, and 24 innings in a row (Game 6 was 14 innings). We’re hoping this isn’t an omen of things to come … |
Southbend Lynx @ Mesa Solar Sox | |
---|---|
Series Preview |
Looks like a hitters series, as both teams starters are struggling
|
Game #1: |
No kidding. Mesa wins 14-13 in a game that featured 36 hits. Familia blows a save and gets the loss when he gives up a Kevin Keirmaeier walk off double. Geovanni Soto hit a grand slam for Southband. Odubel Herrera was a double short of the cycle for Mesa.
|
Game #2: |
The Lynx kept hitting, gathering 21 hits in a 13-5 win. Escobar drives in 7 with 4 hits – two singles, a triple, and a homer. Trumbo also homered for Southbend.
|
Game #3: |
A 1-1 pitchers duel between Johnathan Neise and Ian Kennedy is disrupted with a 4 run 8th for Southbend. Brown’s bases clearing three ruin double was the killer. Neise went the distance, striking out 8.
|
Game #4: |
Mesa starter Raisel Iglesias sets a team record with 16 strikeouts as he twirls a four hit shutout. Todd Frazier homers for the second game in a row, a three run 1st inning blast that was the only scoring in the game.
|
Game #5: |
Southbend had a 4-2 lead in the 8th but Familia and Jason Motte coughed up the lead and the game in 10 innings 6-4. Dozier, Frazier (again) and Drury homered for Mesa.
|
Game #6: |
For the 3rd straight game Todd Frazier homered, this time driving in 5 with 3 hits. Mesa gathers 18 hits in all and pound the Lynx 15-2.
|
Series Summary |
Todd Frazier 11-25, 8 runs, 11 RBI, 2 doubles and 4 homers. Killed the Lynx.
