Valdosta  Snappers @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview

NL Central 2nd place Valdosta (69-57) trots up to Bethesda (66-60) as the Bandicoots cling to a slim one-game lead in the NL East.

Game #1: Carlos Ruiz’s clutch double with two out in the 6th brought in two runs and the Bandicoots survived some late-inning jitters by closer Jonathan Broxton as the escaped by a few hairs with a 4-3 win over Valdosta. Adeiny Hechavarria was 2/3 with a double, a run and an RBI to lead the Snappers offense which came within 90 feet of bailing out starter Tim Hudson (12-10). Hudson gave up all four Bethesda runs on seven hits in 5-2/3 innings but did fan five without allowing a walk. Tyson Ross (5-7) got back into the groove with eight innings of four-hit ball and only allowed a single unearned run before giving way to  Broxton who picked up save #22 but not before giving the hometown fans a headful of gray hairs as he gave up a couple of runs on three hits in the 9th before closing it out.

Game #2:

Collin McHugh and Jake Arrieta duelled it out with the former Oriole coming out on top as Bethesda blanked Valdosta 2-0. Arrieta (9-4) went the distance giving up five hits and striking out eight Snappers. Juan Francisco singled and doubled for Valdosta. McHugh (12-6) fanned 10 in just six innings. David Peralta had his second straight multi-hit game for Bethesda with a single and a double.

Game #3:

Seth Smith’s RBI double in the 5th broke a 2-2- tie and Sonny Gray held the fort the rest of the way to give Bethesda its 3rd straight win 3-2 over Valdosta. Gray (13-5) got the complete game three-hit win with all of the damage coming off the bat of Omar Infante who hit his 6th homer of the season and the  series’s first. Shae Simmons (1-1) got tagged with the loss after four pretty strong innings of relief for Anthony Swarzak who blew out his arm to the tune of a 14-day trip to the shelf.

Game #4: Bethesda rallied from a 2-1 deficit to score a pair of runs in each of the last two frames to take it 5-2. Julio Teheran (11-9) was cruising along for Valdosta until the 7th when he gave up an RBI single to Anthony Rendon and a triple to Lorenzo Cain who seems to have finally woken up. Cain added a double and scored twice in the game. Alex Cobb didn’t factor into the decision, but looked shaky in his five innings as he returned from the DL for Bethesda. Martin  Perez (2-0) was in the right place at the right time to pick up the win and Marco Estrada tossed a scoreless 9th on a whim to pick up his 1st save of the  season. Chris Carter had two of the five hits for Valdosta in the game and drove in a run.
Game #5: Anthony Rendon, Adrian Gonzalez and Jimmy Paredes turned a string of hits into a three-run 6th off Valdosta starter Phil Hughes as they came from behind to win their unlikely fifth straight over the Snappers 4-2. Hughes (9-14) was almost flawless until running into the offensive muck of Bethesda in the 6th and wound up allowing seven hits in 5-1/3 innings with five Ks and, of course, no walks. Alex Wood (11-6) allowed eight hits in six innings but limited the Snappers to two runs (one earned – thank you Jimmy Paredes and your amazing juggling act). Jonathan Broxton notched his 23rd save. Kurt Suzuki had three  hits for Valdosta and drove in a run with Chris Carter smacking a single and a double, scoring once and driving one in. Anthony Rendon and Travis Snider each had two hits for Bethesda.

Game #6:

Marco Estrada’s last-minute sub-in as starter for Tyson Ross couldn’t have gone much better as he allowed just one run as Bethesda completely the dumbass-luck sweep of Valdosta 5-1. Valdosta’s lone run came off Juan Francisco’s 8th homer of the season. Seth Smith (14) and Jimmy Rollins (21) homered for Bethesda with both Rollins and David Peralta each getting three hits. Tim Hudson (12-11) lasted six giving up three runs on nine hits with a walk and six Ks. Estrada (1-0) also went six giving up a walk and five hits while fanning five.

Series Summary

about as likely as a lightning strike on a garden gnome (and almost as rewarding) Bethesda manages a sweep over Valdosta.

Grand Haven  Gators @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags
Series Preview
Long Beach hosts Grand Haven in a key late season series.
Game #1:
Long Beach takes the 1st game behind Dickey’s 3 hit pitching over 8 innings and HRs from Span, Pillar & Dickerson.
Game #2:
Long Beach took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st on RBI singles by the Martinez brothers. Espinosa cut the lead to 2-1 in the 5th but the Dirtbags added a couple of insurance runs and won 4-1. Lester pitched 6 strong innings to improve to 16-6 and Melancon picked up his 34th save.
Game #3:
Emergency starter Belisle pitched 7 shutout innings in the Dirtbags 2-0 win. J.D. Martinez opened the scoring in the 1st when he drove in Victor with the only run Belisle would need. Holt added an insurance run in the 7th with a PH RBI 2b.
Game #4:
Long Beach got another strong pitching performance as Shoemaker threw 7 shutout innings in the 5-0 win. For the second time in the series Span led off a game with a HR. Gennett broke open a close game with a 2 run 2b in the 6th.
Game #5:

Game #6:
Brock Holt had a game for the ages. He went 5-5 with 4 HRs and 8 RBI in the 13-3 Long Beach win. Nobody could have expected a performance like that as he came in with only 2 dingers on the year.
Series Summary
Long Beach sweeps the series and hope to gain ground on Clovis.

Clovis  Wheat Kings @ Columbus  Explorers
Series Preview
1st vs. last – Clovis (76-50) travels to Columbus (55-71) to play the “red hot” Explorers as they seek to pad their now 3 game NL West lead. Explorers have been tough lately (don’t know why) as they took 6 from then NL West leader Long Beach, then went 6-6 on a road trip. So who knows what will happen back home.
Game #1:
Explorers get up 2-0 with runs in the 4th and 5th. Greene takes
no-hitter into the 6th, but gives it up – 1st hit a single to
Castro. Then Gonzalez fouls off two sacrifice attempts, then GO
YARD! for a 2 run HR (his 2nd of the year). LaRoche (19) hits the
game winner in the 7th as Clovis takes the opener 3-2.
CWK 3-6-0
WP G.Gonzalez (8-11)
S Casilla (30)COL 2-8-0
LP Greene (3-7)
Game #2:
Wheat Kings pour it on in game 2 with 4 in the first including a 2 run triple from belt. Happ was hapless, best thing he did was go out for pinch-hitter in the 4th who came through with an rbi single. Then the Explorers tack on 4 more runs including a 2 run Desmond double to put Columbus up 5-4. Cruz leads off the 8th with a solo shot of Varvaro (BS #4) to tie the game. Bottom of the 9th, Loup pitching, with 1 out he walks Carpenter and then Desmond steps in an wallops a 2 run walk-off HR (20) to tie the series.
CWK 5-9-0
LP Loup (3-5)
COL 7-7-0
WP Dunn (4-2)
Game #3: Brett “Cy Young” Oberholtzer takes the hill for game 3 and continues his unbelievable season. Tosses a 5 hit CG shutout and get support from Gordon (3 hits, 2 runs, 2 sb) and Revere (3 hits, run, rbi). Plus 4 Wheat King errors didn’t help their cause either.CWK 0-5-4LP Lohse (13-6)COL 3-9-2WP Oberholtzer (10-2)
Game #4: The shutout string continues but this time it’s Garrett Richards doing the hurling. However he only goes 6.2 innings (2 hits, 4 walks, 9 ks) – but he hit 3 Explorers along the way and got tossed!  Wheat Kings showing their frustration. Explorers couldn’t capitalize on Richards departure. Crawford drives in 2 in the 1st and Castro hits a 2 run blast in the 6th for all the runs the Wheat Kings needed.CWK 4-10-0WP Richards (15-4)COL 0-3-0LP Tepesch (7-9)
Game #5: With the series knotted at 2 games apiece, game 5 would be pivotal. Hunter hits a monster shot (11) in the first and Crawford takes Milone over the CF wall (11) in the 2nd to get Clovis up 2-0. Explorers chip 1 away in the 4th but Cruz hits a 2 run jack (32) in the 5th for the 4-1 lead. Another chip away 1 run in the 5th makes it 4-2 Clovis. Liriano goes 8, 6 hits, 7 Ks 1 earned run. Casilla comes in for the save in the 9th. 1 out Romine gets a single and Nunez comes  in to pinch hit. He hits one down the LF line – it was straight down the line, it could go, it does – 2 run HR (6) and the game is tied. 4th BS for Casilla. Then the 10th, 11th and 12th innings go by – nothing for nobody. 13th, Zimmerman leads off with a double against Grilli. He’s sacrificed to 3rd. Romine up – fly ball, it’s caught, Zim tags and he’s safe, Explorers win in 13.CWK 4-9-1LP Grilli (2-2) 13 innCOL 5-11-1WP Varvaro (4-6)
Game #6: Home town fans show up by the droves for the finale – at least 2/3 of the stadium filled – alright, it was a sellout (they just don’t open 1/3 of the seats when the team is far below .500). Gonzalez vs. Greene again. Columbus gets 1 in the 1st – Clovis 1 ups them with 2 unearned in the 3rd (Greene error). That’s matched in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game. After 7 it’s still 2-2 and Gonzalez and Greene are still in there. Bottom of the 8th Gordon leads off with a double. Carpenter then knocks a single to right center. Davis races in for it, Gordon runs right through the stop sign and is nailed at the plate. Carpenter goes to 2nd. Blackmon then doubles him home to put the Explorers up 3-2.Meanwhile Greene still in – and he faces 3 ending the game with a Belt K.CWK 2-6-1LP Gonzalez (8-12)COL 3-7-1WP Greene (4-7)
Series Summary  Explorers continue their weird string – 16-8 in their recent matchups with NL West teams. Next week they go on the road to Valdosta – back in the NL Central. Clovis will play host to Iron City. Beware those teams at or near the bottom of the heep can be trouble!
