Valdosta  Snappers @ Clovis  Wheat Kings
Series Preview
Second place Valdosta heads west to take on Clovis who is tied for first in the wild, wild west.
Game #1:
CWK 5 VAL 0
Kyle Lohse tosses a shutout with 11 strikeouts to quell the Snappers 5-0. Cruz picked up 3 rbi with a double and a homer while Jason Castro picked up the other 2 with a tater of his own. Perhaps the inside story of the game was the poor base running of the Snappers with a man thrown out at the plate, another at third, and another at second. On the injury front Valdosta pitcher Shae Simmons went down for a what looks like a couple of weeks at least  with some elbow discomfort while warming up to come into the game.
Game #2:
VAL 6 CWK 4
Cruz ties it up at 4 in the bottom of the 8th with a two run bomb but Snappers come right back in the top of the ninth and plate a pair on a Reddick double and Martin’s base hit for the win.
Game #3:
VAL 3 CWK 0
All Phil Hughes as he tosses a magnificent one hit shutout with 12 strikeouts. A seventh inning Belt single that took a funny hop through the infield was the only thing that kept Hughes from ringing up a no-hitter.
Game #4:
CWK 3 VAL 2
Valdosta homers off the bats of Schumaker and Carter cancelled out homers from Wheat Kings Crawford and Saunders making the difference in the game a seeing eye single off the bat of Murphy that plated La Roche in the fifth. Gonzalez earned the win with 5 solid innings while the Ancient Snapper Tim Hudson took the tough loss.
Game #5:

CWK 2 VAL 1 (10 innings)

McHugh vs. Paxton, a pair of good young arms on the mound and they did not disappoint the sellout crowd. Wheat Kings picked up an early run on a Byrd double and the Snappers replied with a Carter homer, his third of the series, to knot it up at 1 each. Both starters departed leaving it up to the pens to sort things out. Bottom of the tenth and Crawford doubled off of Doolittle with one out, an intentional walk to Phillips to get to the left handed Castro but the Wheat Kings called him back and sent up right handed Rafael Ynoa, expecting to see Kimbrell into the game. The Snappers had other ideas, saving him for when they grabbed a lead but Ynoa made it all a moot point when he lined a single into center which easily scored Crawford and end the game.

Game #6:
Val 5 CWK 2
Martin smashes a three run blast and Inante adds a two run shot to power Valdosta in the finale. Swarzak pitches the complete game to bring his record to 5-11 on the season.
Series Summary
Clovis and Valdosta split the 6 gamer in a good series that featured some very nice pitching performances from both staffs as well as sluggers Cruz and Carter both pounding out 3 homers apiece. Next week Clovis hosts the Outlaws of New York while the Snappers head home to take on the Lumber Company from Pittsburgh.

Long Beach  Dirt Bags @ Columbus  Explorers
Series Preview
The Long Beach Dirt Bags (65-43, T1 in NL West) travel to the heartland to play the Columbus Explorers 43-65, 4th in NL Central). Explorers have been hot lately, winning 5 of their last 10 and 4 of their last 6. Uncommon play for a team in a long rebuilding project. Dirt Bags march into town winning 7 of their last 10 and sport a good road record.
Game #1:
Gordon and Revere combine for 5 hits and 3 runs – Shane Greene (2-6) goes 8 4 hit innings with 10 Ks and Columbus surprises the Dirt Bags in game 1, 3-1. Blaine Hardy (2) the save. VMart produces the lone Long Beach run with a solo HR (30) in the 6th. At the time, it tied the game. Norris (12-5) took the  loss – he only gave up 5 hits and 2 runs.
Game #2:
Explorers again score a run in the 1st, Revere has 2 hits along with Carpenter as they score 3 runs in the game. Desmond drives home 2 and the “unknown” Explorers again surprise the Dirt Bags 5-1. 4 run 8th for Columbus broke open the tie – the tie was gained in the top of the 8th when Ozuna doubled home PR Ruggiano (in for PH Smolinski who had doubled). Again an Explorer starter is strong, Happ goes 8 innings, 4 hits, 8 Ks for the win (7-5). Atchison, in for Lester (7 ip, 3 hits, 1 run) takes the loss giving up the 4 runs in the 8th – but it was J.D. Martinez error that led to the 4 runs.
Game #3: Miracles and weirdness continue in game 3 as the teams each score 1 in the 1st. Gennett, JMart and Donaldson each get 2 hits (score 2, drive in 2) – VMart goes 3 for 5 with an RBI and 2 runs. Gennett (7) and VMart (31) homer – back to back in the 5th and yet the Dirt Bags fall 4 runs short as the Columbus wins this one 8-4. Ventura exits after 3 innings (3 ip, 8 hits, 5 runs, 5ks). Explorers capitalize on Gordon’s 2 hits and 2 runs, Hernandez 3 rbis, Blackmon 2 run HR (13) and Carpenter’s 3 hits. Again a starter, S.Baker, gets the win (5-6) and the bullpen holds Long Beach in check. S.Baker even had 2 hits including a double in the game.
Game #4: By now the hometown fans are in a trance – but the Explorers fail to score in the 1st. Then the Dirt Bags grab a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Span gets a 2 out single, steals second and scores on Ozuna’s double. In the bottom half, Gordon reaches on a gift of an infield single, moves to second, tags to 3rd and then waltzes home on a Desmond 2 run shot (19). Dirt Bags get the 2 right back in the 4th on rbi singles from Hardy and Aviles to grab a 3-2 lead. Explorers  retake the lead on a 2 run double by Avila in the 5th. They then add an insurance run in the 6th after a Gordon triple (3rd hit for him). Oberholzter, who is  having a magic year, goes 7.1 innings and picks up the win (7-2), Dunn gets the save (5) as he and Perez keep Long Beach at bay the rest of the game. Shoemaker (6-9) takes the loss.
Game #5:
Nobody knows what to think as game 5 rolls around. Tepesch steps to the hill. He works out of a 1st and 3rd, 1 out jam in the 1st and never looks back. He tosses a CG 8 hit shutout as the Columbus Dynamos (I mean Explorers) take another game, 5-0. Gordon 2 hits, Blackmon 3 hits (2 rbis, 14th HR), De Aza a 2 run HR (6) lead the 11 hit attack. Dickey is the victim in this one (8-9). VMart, JMart and Donaldson each get 2 hits.
Game #6: Series ending game – the fans show up at the park with brooms – the city stores are no depleted of them – sell out crowd coming to witness something they’ve can’t recall ever seeing (at least not in their lifetimes). A Sweep?Explorers get 1 in the first (not Gordon, he goes hitless in the game). Revere however gets on and benefits from Gennett error. The teams trade runs in the 4th – Ozuna an rbi double. Score is 2-1 going to the bottom of the 7th when PH Zimmerman launches a 2 run HR (4) in a 3 run Explorer inning. Greene again stifles the Dirt Bags (7 ip, 4 hits, 1 run, 6 ks, 4ws) for the win (3-6). Hardy and Belisario keep the score at 5-1. JMart and Ozuna with 4 of the 5 Long Beach hits. THE SWEEP!!!! History!!!
Series Summary
Explorer pitchers have been mini Cy Youngs lately – no reason why. Hitters have been opportunistic. Feeling around Columbus is they caught the opponents thinking ahead and feeling it would be an easy time. Lots of Columbus bench players getting time in the field and at the plate saying they want regular jobs. Who knows what it is, fans will take it. Team now departs for series at Sacramento and Grand Haven before returning home. But how sweet it has been.

DAL then ties it in the 7th on a Solarte rbi-2b, SBL get the lead back in the B7 on a Blanco error. Elyria  Indians @ Traverse City  Crusaders
Series Preview
The 43-63 Elyria Indians come into Traverse City, where the Crusaders have won their last series against the World Champion Hollywood Werewolves (4-2), can they continue their new-found momentum? The Crusaders also won their 47th game, they need 5 more wins to tie their franchise record for 52 wins in a season. Hey, it comes in Baby Steps, cut us Crusaders a break!
Game #1:
Tyler Skaggs was phenomenal, only running into trouble in the 9th inning, allowing only 3 hits, 2 walks & 2 runs in 8.2 innings; Skaggs is now 3-2, with a 2.08 ERA for the season. Luke Gregerson comes in for Save #23. 5 stolen bases for the Crusaders, including 2 from Brian Dozier.
TRAVERSE CITY 5, ELYRIA 2
Game #2:
Elyria was forced to start David Robertson for Game 2, due to health issues with the rotation; Robertson gives up three runs in the bottom of the first. The Indians was fight back, taking the lead 5-3 in the top of the 4th — but it wouldn’t be enough, the Crusaders led by Yonder Alonso (3-for-4, HR, 2 doubles & 3 RBI) would rally back with a run in the 6th & 2 runs in the 8th. Pedro Baez comes up with his first save of the season (replacing a tired Luke Gregerson).Christian Bethancourt hit a two-run HR in a losing cause for the tribe, his second HR of the season.
TRAVERSE CITY 7, ELYRIA 5
Game #3: Jordan Zimmermann would allow 3 runs in the first 4 innings, before settling down for the Indians from innings 5-8. Jacob deGrom was stellar, 8.1 innings, before getting ejected in the 9th for plunking back-to-back batters, which would lead to a 4-run inning for the Indians. The Indians with a 4-3 lead, entering the 9th, decide to stay with Zimmermann on the mound. The Crusaders would tie the game, and then win the game with a walk-off single to right by Brett Gardner, off of Dillon Gee in from the bullpen.Zimmermann falls to 11-5, with a 2.20 ERA in tact. Jacob deGrom gets the no-decision (6-6), with his ERA at 2.61 for the season — deGrom logged 8 K’s, allowing only 4 hits & 2 ER’s.You would have thought the Crusaders won a playoff spot with that walk-off in front of a home crowd.TRAVERSE CITY 5, ELYRIA 4
Game #4: RBI doubles by Yan Gomes and Ryan Raburn was the bulk of the story for the Crusaders during the bottom of the 2nd — scoring 5 runs; Raburn went 2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI & a run for T.C.Jordan Lyles pitched effective enough, despite getting into trouble by falling in love with the walk (5 walks) — he did allow only 4 hits & a run in 6.2 innings. Cesar Ramos, Dale Thayer & Sam Freeman pitched themselves out of high-stress situations — combining to  allow no runs in 2.1 innings, earning themselves a Ice Cream Cone afterwards.Weird stat of the night, 8 walks allowed by T.C. (only 4 hits though) — meaning Elyria had plenty of chances.Mike Pelfrey fell to 0-8 for the Tribe, and sports a awful 9.49 ERA for the season.TRAVERSE CITY 5, ELYRIA 1
Game #5: Crusaders come in with a 6-game winning streak in tact, all at home. The Crusaders had an early 3-0 lead after 3 innings, but Travis Wood runs into trouble in the 4th, giving up a Grand Slam to Asdrubal Cabrera. Traverse City would tie it back up with a pinch-hit RBI single by Danny Santana, 4-4, eventually  forcing extras.Oswaldo Garcia and Allen Craig would both hit two-run HR’s in the top of the 10th, off of Sam Freeman and Tommy Kahnle — as T.C. runs  out of gas on their hot streak, finally falling to the Indians.Mike Minor records 10 K’s, allowing 3 ER in a 6-inning no-decision.ELYRIA 9, TRAVERSE CITY 4 (10 Innings)
Game #6: The Crusaders collected 9 hits, by each starter except for their DH-Ryan Raburn, including a RBI double off the bench by Eric Campbell. The team was “Even Steven” or “Steady Eddie” or whatever I’m talking about.Yonder Alonso hit his 11th HR of the season, a solo shot.Elyria started the game off to a 1-0 lead with Jacoby Ellsbury’s RBI double in the first, but Tyler Skaggs once again kept the Indians in check, allowing 6 hits & 1 ER in 6.1 innings with 5 K’s. Skaggs improves to 4-2, with a 2.01 ERA (through 62.2 innings) — over-achieving his real-life 2014 numbers in the MLB (Hey, we’ll take it!) With that victory, the  Crusaders have tied their single-season wins franchise record at 52 — with 48 games remaining.TRAVERSE CITY 4, ELYRIA 1
