Southbend Lynx @ Dallas Cougars

Series Summary

Southbend wins 4 of 6

Manhattan Project @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

Manhattan visits Columbus – a couple of second place teams but Manhattan is looking a lot closer to the top of the NL East than Columbus is to the NL Central.

Game #1: With Manhattan staff ace Fernandez on the mound, the Explorers choose to rest a bunch of regulars. However, Rusin had other thoughts in mind as he tosses a 4 hitter over 8 innings – oh, the 1st hit he gave up was a solo HR to Seager (10) in the 1st. They don’t call Fernandez the ace of the Project for nothing, he makes that 1-0 lead stand up, and up, and up. Doesn’t give up a hit until the 6th. So it’s 1-0 going into the bottom of the 9th and Smyly comes in to wrap it up – nope, he gives up a walk and 2 hits and the Explorers tie it up. Game goes to the 11th where Huston Street comes in and gives up 2 hits and a run as Columbus shuts down the project after the 1st and wins it 2-1 in 11 innings. WP LeCure (4-2), LP Street (1-3)

Game #2:

Manhattan scores 5 runs in the 3rd off Axelrod. Scoring included solo HR from Freeman (13). Freeman, Drew, Schumaker, Jackson, and Denorfia all have 2 hits in the game (12 for Manhattan). Oddly enough, those 5 runs were all they scored – Axelrod ends up going 8 – but still loses (3-3) as Zito pitches a 5 hit CG shutout (7-4). Final Manhattan 5-0 winners.

Game #3:

Columbus comes back from early 1-0 deficit (Ramos HR (8) in the 2nd) to score 1 in 3rd, 2 in 4th and 1 in the 5th for a 4-1 lead. Hill pops a 2 run shot (7) in the 6th to cut the lead to 4-3. Then in the 8th with Dunn on the hill for Columbus, Seager doubles and moves to 3rd on a Hill ground out. He scores to tie the game on a Garcia groundout. Jackson singles and Ramos hits another HR (9), two more in and Manhattan takes a 6-4 lead. Smyly comes in in the 9th and this time holds the lead for the save (9). WP Simon (5-2), LP Dunn (2-2, BS 5)

Game #4:

Manhattan scores 1st and then a few more times to win this one 5-3. Explorers match the Project’s 2 spot in the 8th to make it look close. But again, the dame in this one was done by Ramos – he gets 3 rbis on 2 MORE homeruns (10, 11). He’s putting an application for NL Player of the week. WP Porcello (8-7) goes 6.2 innings, 6 hits 1 run. Smyly gets the save (10). Chen (2-7) takes the loss.

Game #5:

The score is 3-1 after 7 with Manhattan holding onto the slim lead. In the 8th however, with 1 out, Ramos (yes, him again) crashes a 2 run HR (12) – yes, another homer, to break the game open. Project adds an insurance run inthe 9th and Columbus rallies in the bottom half but it dies after 2 runs. Final MANHATTAN 6-3 winners. WP Darvish (8-8), S Street (5). LP Oberholtzer (4-4). Ramos goes 1 for 5 with the HR and 3 rbis.

Game #6:

Fernadez back on the mound against Rusin and Columbus scores 1st – 1 in the 1st. Project tie it in the 3rd on a Garcia rbi single. Explorers (and Rusin) continue to play Fernandez tough and score a 2nd run in the 6th on a Zimmerman SF. Manhattan gets that one back as well in the 7th when Fernandez hits an RBI double – he’s tired of not getting any support. In the 9th, he’s lifted for a PH (after the rbi double, why? – Robinson strikes out for him. But it doesn’t matter, 3 runs are plated including a Denorfia solo HR (3) and the Project takes a 5-2 lead into the bottom on the 9th.  Smyly in – 3 batters later he’s out – giving up 3 hits. A Carpenter single, a Zimmerman HR (12), now 5-4, and a Desmond single. Enter Huston Street. He gets Solano to ground to 3b for the out – Desmond to 2nd. DeAza up, and he whales a liner down the 1b line, Freeman stabs and snares it just before it went past him, OUT, and then he fires to 2nd and they
double up Desmond to end the game (Desmond tried so hard to get back, he injured himself at 2nd – but short term). So Manhattan holds on for a 5-4 win, Fernandez gets the win (10-2) and Street the save (6). LeCure the loss (4-3).
Series Summary Tight series even though Manhattan managed to win 5 of 6.

Game #1:

VIR 7-1 M.Scherzer (13-4) is too tough for Z.Britton (0-2) and the Crime. A 6-run 5th highlighted by N.Walker’s 2-run double is more than enough. M.Machado does hit #11 for DET.

DET 7-0 Bumgarner (13-5) is in control all the way as he tosses 8 innings of 4-hit ball with 14 K’s! A.Jones goes deep for DET and

Game #5:

VIR 2-1 C.Archer (8-1) K’s 9 and gets another win as Schierholtz and Santana knock in runs in the 6th and the VIR bullpen shuts down the Crime after a run-scoring triple by Ichiro.

New York Outlaws @ Iron City Yinzers

Series Preview

First place New York comes to Iron City looking to put some more distance between itself and the pack in the NL East.

Iron City 8, New York 3

Game #2:

This was a back-and-forth affair until the Yinzers scored four in the sixth to put it away. Carlos Gonzalez doubled and homered for the

Break up the Yinzers! Some research might have to be done, but this might be the first three-game winning streaks of the season for Iron
City. Even though Iron City will have to deal with an injury to starter Paul Maholm, Raul Ibanez sent them home happy with a walk-off homer in the ninth.

Iron City 3, New York 2

Hideki Kuroda stops the slide for the Outlaws with a seven-hit shutout.

New York 2, Iron City 0

A series win! A series win! I don’t believe what I just saw! The Yinzers score three in the seventh and one in the eighth to pick up what is
believed to be Iron City’s first series win of the season.
