Jersey Nor’easters @
Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

A pair of 3rd place teams in the NL collide in an epic battle of no
pitching staffs to decide the fate of … well to decide something, as
the Jersey Nor’easters travel to the Columbus Explorers confines for a 6
game series (that’s divisible by 3!).

Game #1:

Jersey gets off to a 2-0 start in the 1st on Prince Fielder HR (11), but
Explorers score 1 in the 1st, 2nd and 2 in the 3rd – and add insurance
in the 6th for a 5-2 victory. Nothing big on Columbus side EXCEPT a
solid 2 hit performance from Oberholtzer (W 2-1) over 6 innings (and
those were in the 1st). Belisario and Perez (S 1)) finish up the final 3
giving up just one more hit. Lincecum takes the loss (3-5).

Game #2:

Jersey again starts quickly with 2 in the 1st on a 2 out 2 run single
from Barnes (2 of his 3 rbis in the game). Happ was pumped because he
let everyone on with no outs, then gets 2 Ks – but then gives up the 2
run single. Ever notice when the home team pitcher gets pumped, the next
guy gets a hit, but when its the visitor pitcher who gets pumped, the
guy(s) are out! Just sayin’. Nor’easters run the score to 6-0 after the
top of the 5th including a 3 run 5th. Then the Explorers wake up scoring
2 in the 5th, single runs in the 6th and 7th and after Jersey moves to a
7-4 lead in the 8th, they tie it in the bottom half on a 3 run De Aza HR
(8).

Top 9 Jersey gets runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out, but can only move
the runner on 2nd to 3rd on fly out. Then Fielder whiffs to end the
threat. Bottom half threat ends when Desmond is stranded at 2nd after
Nunez is out at 3rd on SB attempt. 10th inning Jersey again gets runners
on the corners with 2 outs but Barnes whiffs to end the threat.

Bottom half with Victorino on 1st and De Aza up, Columbus calls for the
hit and run – on the FIRST pitch it’s strike 3 and throw him out at 2nd
for the inning ending DP – first time I’ve ever seen a hit and run on
the 1st pitch end up as strike ’em out, throw ’em out DP.

To the 11th and Jersey reawakens to the tune of 3 runs including a
Prince 2 run HR (12) and they earn a 10-7 victory.

WP Morris (2-1), S Furbush (4) LP Dunn (1-1)

Fielder 4 hits in the game including 2 doubles and homer.

Game #3:

Far less excitement in this one as Jersey gains the upper hand in the
series with a 2-1 victory. Well less excitement in terms of offense,
Jersey scored 1 in the 1st (Escobar single), Columbus 1 in the 2nd –
Victorino HR (3). Meanwhile Magill is tossing a gem fanning 12 through 8
innings. He leaves for a PH in the 8th only to have B.Chen come in in
the 9th and give up a HR (1) to Torres for the win (or loss for Chen
2-6). Rice (1-0) gets the win in relief, Shaw the save (9).

Game #4:

After a day off, the Explorers tie up the series with a 7-4 win that
looked like it would be a Tepisch victory until the Nor’easter scored 3
in the top of the 7th to tie it at 4-4. Columbus came back in the bottom
half for 2 and 1 more in the 8th to seal the deal. Montero 2 run shot
(7) part of the 7th inning run outburst for Jersey, Kendrick also went
deep (4). De Aza (9) and Zimmerman (7) homered for Columbus. Dunn (BS 3)
was the winner (2-1), Dunn the save (2). Rice the loss (1-1).

Game #5:

Nor’easters again regain the series lead with a 6-5 lead that survived
late inning threats from the Explorers including 1 run 9th that ended
when Shaw (S 10) got Carpenter to ground out with a runner on 2nd.

Jersey likes to score 2 in the 1st – again in this game, and 3 in the
3rd. Offense was powered by 3 hits from Fielder (who had a monster
series) – 2 runs, 2 hits each from Escobar, Barnes and Thomas (they
combined for 5 rbis). Ryu pitched 6 and hung on for the win (6-2),
Axelrod took the loss (1-2).

Game #6:

Game 6 provided Columbus 2 big opportunities: 1. they could even the
series and 2. Harrell could win his first game of the year.

Looked like #2 (and by default #1) was going to happen. Harrell (who’s
grade should jump up 1 each inning he doesn’t allow a run – that would
not amount to much of a boost over the course of a game) was actually
pretty sharp. He was good through 6 giving up only 1 run and 3 hits. He
started the 7th gave up a single and left the game – with the LEAD!! It
was 4-1 when he walked to the dugout (even had a spring in his step even
though he was leaving). But that evaporated when Bellisario gave up a
hit (and got 1 out), then Perez comes in and gives up a walk and a GRAND
SLAM to Kendrick (5) and suddenly it’s 5-4 Jersey! Harrell didn’t even
have the strength to tear up the dugout, he just dropped his head and
ran to the clubhouse – “when will this end?” Well at least things
changed some when De Aza hits a 1 out 3 run double in the bottom of the
8th to get Columbus back in the lead 7-5. Good thing it was a 3 run
double because Dunn gives up one in the 9th before getting the save (7)
and the final is 7-6 Columbus. So at least they got goal number 1 done –
evened the series.

Series Summary

Two 3rd place teams with little in the way of starters did make for an
exciting series and each team won 3 times (fitting).

Harang, advancing from a 3 to a 20 during the game throws a CG shutout.

*

4 of the 6 games, decreasing Outlaws lead to 5 games.

Light at the end of the tunnel for NY: all injured players are now
healthy.

Motor City Muscle @ Clovis Wheat Kings

Series Preview

Motor City Muscle with a plethora of exceptional young talent heads to
Clovis to take on the Wheat Kings.

Game #1:

A close game that sees Clovis hang on for a 3-2 victory. Castro doubled
in a pair in the fourth for what would prove to be the game winner.
Griffin improved to 7-1 while Grilli picked up save 15 despite loading
the bases in the ninth before wriggling off the hook. Morton took the
tough luck loss for the Muscle.

Game #2:

Muscle 1-0. Wheat Kings could not solve Jerome Williams, who lives in
Clovis. Williams was masterful before a huge crowd of friends and family
who saw him toss a complete game, 5 hit, shutout. Sanchez took Gio
Gonzalez deep in the 7th for the only run of the game.

Game #3:

Wheat Kings got all over Dan Straily for an 8-2 win. Arenado and Murphy
both went deep for the Wheat Kings to back Matt Harvey who picked up his
6th win.

Game #4:

Wheat Kings pull out a 4-3 win when Nolan Arenado drove home pinch
runner Jose Reyes in the bottom of the ninth. Castellanos had tied it in
the top of the ninth with a two out single off of Grilli who blew his
5th save but picked up the win in its place.

Game #5:

Clovis scored 6 over the first three innings, Motor City scored 6 over
the last three innings; the difference was what seemed at the time like
a garbage run when Gardner singled home Tuiasosopo in the 8th to make it
a 7-3 game at that juncture. Both starters were long gone at that point
but both got decisions, Cashner picking up win number 5 and Locke being
saddled with his 7th loss.

Game #6:

An old fashioned pitchers duel as Morton and Griffin were both firing
nothing but BBs to the plate; one, two, three, four, five, scoreless
innings. In the sixth Sanchez doubles but dies at third, Cruz does the
same for Clovis. The seventh sees another scoreless frame, the eighth
both teams get a runner to second but no further. The ninth comes and
goes without a blemish. The tenth Caminero takes over for Morton and
doesn’t miss a beat, Griffin goes one more for ten scoreless innings
before he is pulled to start the 11th for Rodriguez who gives up a pair
of base-hits before Clovis puts in the call to Alex Torres who gets out
of the jam unscathed but Clovis fails to score in the 11th as well. To
the 12th and Blevins comes in for Motor City. A quick 12th from Blevins
and Torres who stayed in the game sends it to the 13th still scoreless.
Torres sets the Muscle down quickly to send it the bottom of the 13th.
With one out Rollins singles up th e middle and steals second on the
first pitch. Blevins gets Michael Saunders for the first out and with
the pitchers spot up Clovis calls on Jose Reyes who was given an
intentional walk. With runners on first and second the Muscle called on
Tommy Hunter from the pen in a strange move as they lost the platoon
advantage with Brett Gardner and Brandon Belt coming up. Gardner popped
out setting the stage for Brandon Belt who dropped a single into right
where Chris Young was playing. Taking advantage of Young’s average arm
Rollins came screaming around third sliding under the tag for the game
winning run. Final in 13 innings, Clovis 1 Motor City 0.

Series Summary

*

Great series. Motor City looks scary in the very near future. Clovis
takes five of six but five of the six were one run games that could have
easily ended in a different outcome.

Tempe Tempers @
Roseville Thorns

Series Preview

Tempe Tempers visited the Roseville Thorns for a seven game series that

Game #2:

Tempe 4-1 Tulo went deep again and Soriano also added a two run HR.
Colon left the game and will be on the DL for 24 days. Roseville also
lost Encarnacion (3) and Pierzynsky (5) for the majority of this series

Tempe 4-1 Cespedes 2 run triple was all Chacin needed. Chacin went 7

in relief and gave up a single and then a 2 run pinch hit homerun to
Gonzo.

improved to 10-3. He struck out six and only walked two batters. Cano
hit a two run HR on the day.

Game #6:

Tempe 9-7 Encarnacion came back from the DL and slugged two homeruns. He
unfortunately couldn’t make up for a Gattis 2 run HR and a Cespedes
grand slam.

Game #7:

Tempe 5-2. Chacin went a solid six innings improving to 10-0. Cano and
Beltre each hit homeruns and drove in all five runs. Holland recorded

a 1-0 lead heading to the 9th. DAL scored 7 runs without an XBH, while

A mentally taxing split. Both teams hit the road next week. DAL to TIJ,
