·         Southbend Lynx @ Bethesda Bandicoots

Series Preview

Two teams on the outside looking in squared off in Bethesda with the edge in hitting going to Southbend and the edge in pitching to the Bandicoots.

Game #1:

Chris Heisey homered and doubled in a supporting role to give Sonny Gray his first win of the season as Bethesda took the opener over the Lynx 4-1. Jon Niese pitched 7 quality innings of two-run ball for the Lynx and fanned eight but fell to 1-2 behind a sputtering offense that featured a lineup where the #4 through #9 hitters were without a player hitting .200. Heisey’s homer was his 1st of the season and we thank Mr. Heisey for making his pre-game callup seem like pure genious on the part of the Bethesda management.

Game #2:

Marco Estrada continued to roll for Bethesda improving to 3-0 as he shutout the Lynx for eight innings as they fell 5-0 to the hometown clowns. Chris Davis (4) and Chris Heisey (2) homered for Bethesda. Estrada fanned eight in the game and allowed only three hits – two of which came off the bat of Jed Lowrie who bumped up his average to .379. Mr. Davis meanwhile continued to drive in runs with two in the game to give him 16 in 16 games.

Game #3: Bethesda starter Alex Cobb continued to struggle but was bailed out by the big bat of Chris Davis as the home team won for the third straight time over Southbend 9-4. Davis (5) homered for the second straight game and drove in four runs and scored three. Travis Snider had three hits for Bethesda. Jed Lowrie and Jose Molina each had a pair of hits for the Lynx with Mark Trumbo finally starting to show signs of life as he clobbered his 2nd homer of the season. All of the Lynx’s runs came in the 3rd inning as they erased a 3-0 early lead by Bethesda. Southbend’s Derek Holland was definitely not sharp, walking three and allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits in just 2.2 innings.
Game #4: Southbend made the most of a mid-series day off as they clubbed the be-jesus out of the first three Bandicoots to take the mound and won handily 12-6. Every Lynx hitter had at least one base hit with none other than Jed Lowrie leading the way with three giving him a sweet .409 batting average on the year. Jonny Gomes (2) homered for the Lynx. The Lynx had only two extra base hits in their 14-hit barrage but got a big lift from some crazy as a shithouse rat pitching by Bethesda hurlers who walked seven in the game. Gomes scored four times and drove in three and walked three. Scott Diamond improved to 2-2 despite pitching like crap – six runs on 13 hits in 7.1 innings. Most of the damage done by Bethesda came from Anthony Rendon and Chris Davis. Rendon drove in a pair with his first homer of the season while Davis bopped #6 and had three RBIs to give him three straight games with a homer and a whopping 23 RBIs in 18 games. It was a sad day for t he Bethesda offense however as the bottom three in the order each managed to get a pair of hits but could only manage one run scored. Martin Perez (0-1) crapped the bed for Bethesda giving up five runs on three hits and four walks in just one inning. Nicely done, dude. Ya friggin jerk.
Game #5: Southbend continued to roll behind Cy Young hopeful David Huff who mesmerized the Bethesda hitters for over eight innings in the Lynx’s 5-2 win. Huff fanned six and gave up seven hits to even his record at 1-1. Ryan Ludwick (1) homered and drove in two for the Lynx. Sonny Gray dropped to 1-2 after allowing two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings. Matt Joyce had a couple of doubles for Southbend and Jed Lowrie continued to hit with a single and a double in three at bats to lift his average to .420. JJ Putz had a well-earned save in this one as he managed to get the final out with the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate.
Game #6: Chris Davis got back on track with his 4th and 5th homers of the series and drove in four runs to carry the Bandicoots to a series ending 6-1 over the Lynx. Brandon Cumpton (3-1) tossed six 3-hit, shutout innings for Bethesda. Jed Lowrie was 0/5 in the game and fell to a pitiful .392 on the season. Jon Niese (1-3) lost for the second time in the series for the Lynx. Mark Trumbo (3) picked up his second homer of the series and lifted his batting average to an eye-popping .130. Anthony Rendon smacked his 2nd homer of the season and the series in the game. Cumpton made a mark on the series – on Kevin Frandsen’s head, that is – with a cutter that plonked the Lynx infielder and sent him the the DL for 11 days.

Series Summary *

The series puts Southbend at 5-15 on the season despite Jed Lowrie’s torrid hitting. For Bethesda, they may have made team history for being at .500 (10-10) this late in the season. Sad.
