·         Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Bethesda Bandicoots

Series Preview

A very good hitting team (Pittsburgh) travels to bash at a pretty poor-hitting team (Bethesda). With the torrid power-hitting of Chris Davis and some quality starting pitching by guys like Cobb, Gray and Perez the Bandicoots are hoping that they will for the first time escape competing in the draft lottery.

Game #1: Justin Verlander took a stellar two-hitter into the 9th inning but got a case of early season heebie geebies, plonking Jon Jay and Jose Iglesias to start the inning and then giving up a game-winning single to Anthony Rendon to lift the Bandicoots to a 1-0 win in the series opener. As good as Verlander was, he was evenly matched by Pirates’ rookie hurler Brandon Cumpton who went the distance with a one-hitter. Cumpton fanned seven and walked only one with Pittsburgh 2nd baseman Jason Kipnis getting the only hit. Anthony Rendon had two of the three Bethesda hits – Lorenzo Cain had the other. Jay’s beaning was the already the third time this season he was hit by a pitch.
Game #2: A four-run outburst against the beleaguered Bethesda bullpen in the top of the 9th lifted the Lumber Company to a series-evening 6-3 win over the Bandicoots. Andre Ethier and Jose Tabata each had a pair of RBIs off relievers Jake Odorizzi and Josh Outman in the 9th to pace Pittsburgh to the win. With a bullpen that can only dream of being crappy, the late-inning self-destruct was something Bethesda came into the season braced for seeing a lot of. Carlos Quentin (1) homered for Pittsburgh. Jon Jay (1) and Chris Davis (2) homered for Bethesda. Sergio Santos nailed down the game with his 4th save of the season.

Game #3:

The Lumber Company sawed their way through Bethesda pitchers James McDonald and Josh Outman for four runs apiece as they ran off with an easy 8-2 17-hit win. Bud Norris (1-0) tossed 8 strong innings, fanning 10 Bandicoots for his first win of the year. Jason Kipnis and Adam Lind each had four hits with Darin Ruf (3) and Jonathan Lucroy (1) proving the power.

Game #4:

Homer-happy hurler Marco Estrada held the Lumber Company to just one trip to the launching pad as the Bandicoots evened the series with a 4-2 win. Estrada fanned eight in 8 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Andre Ethier was the lone Pitt hitter to get to him. Jon Jay had three hits for Bethesda which as a team stranded 14 runners in the game.

Game #5: Adam Lind’s 2nd homer of the game in the top of the 9th off reliever Josh Outman carried the Lumber Company to a 4-3 squeaker over Bethesda. Outman continued to be the poster child for retroactive abortion for Bethesda, screwing up an otherwise decent pitching performance by Martin Perez and Shawn Kelley and inflated his ERA to 13.50 while miraculously only losing his first game of the year. Lind’s pair of dingers gave him four on the year to go with a nifty 12 RBIs in just 11 games. Anibal Sanchez (3-0) continued his dominance with a 10-K, 5-hit performance with no walks. Jon Jay got plonked for the 4th time in the year.

Game #6:

Pittsburgh and Bethesda each had seven hits, but the Lumber Company was far more efficient in turning them into runs as they won 5-1. Bethesda continued to have problems turning baserunners into runs, stranding 10 in the game compared to Pitt’s five. Darin Ruf and JJ Hardy each had a pair of hits for Pittsburgh. Tony Cruz had three hits for Bethesda.

Game #7:

Chris Davis’s two-run shot in the first inning was barely enough to give Brandon Cumpton his second win in the series as Bethesda hung on for a 2-1 victory. Andre Ethier (3) homered for Pitt. Davis’s two RBIs put him at 14 for the young season. Bud Norris (1-1) went the distance for Pittsburgh allowing just six hits.

Series Summary *

with four wins, Pittsburgh emerges from the series 9-4 overall while Bethesda was lucky to have stayed near .500 and now sports a 6-8 record. Next week, Bethesda will host South BEnd while Pittsburgh entertains Elyria.

Game #4:

Selkirk 5 Clovis 2
Hammel tiosses a complete game giving up only 5 hits and 2 unearned runs to get Selkirk their first win of the series. Upton mashed a two run homer in the second to give the Steelers a lead they would never relinquish.

Game #5:

Selkirk 7 Clovis 4 (18 innings)
Miller blasted a 2 run homer in the 18th to break a 4-4 tie. For good measure Sandoval sent one out of the park as well for back to back homers for the Steelers. The story of the game however was the Steeler bullpen throwing darts for 12 straight scoreless innings led by Danny Salazar who fired the last seven and picked up the win.

Game #6:

Clovis 3 Selkirk 0
Griffin does just what you want after an 18 inning game, he follows it up with a masterful 4 hit, 10 strikeout, shutout performance. Gardner slapped a pair of doubles to lead the offense for Clovis.

Game #7:

Clovis 5 Selkirk 2
Gardner, Hunter, and Dunn all went deep to lead the Wheat Kings offense. Gonzalez tossed 7+ for the win and Grilli picked up save #6 for Clovis.

Sacramento Capitals @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

NL cellar dwellers (ok, week 1) – from the Central, Columbus Explores (1-6), hosting from the West, Sacramento Capitols (2-5). Could be fun …

Game #1: 15 runs and 27 hits including 5 HRs turn a dull Columbus 6-2 lead into an 8-7 barn burner. Sacramento 2 run first is overpowered by 4 run Explorer 6th for that lead, but then then the Capitals clawed back including a 3 run 9th and Dunn blows the save. Game is 7-7 after 9. Bottom 10th, Solano, Lough, and Victorino single to load the bases with no outs. De Aza whiffs but Eric Young, Jr. slaps one back through the box and drawn in infield to score the winning run. 8-7 Columbus, Dunn (1-0) gets the garbage win after letting in 3 runs in the 9th. Flynn (0-1) gets the loss. Dickerson slams 2 (1, 2), Pujols homers (2), Lough (1) and Nunez (1) homer for Columbus – Nunez a PH homer. Dickerson gets 4 rbis.

Game #2:

Columbus again gives up runs late, 4 in the 6th, 1 in the 7th and 3 in the 9th, but still win 17-10 (this was NOT a football game). 37 hits and 5 walks produced all those runs. Columbus HRs – De Aza (2), Desmond (1) and Nunez (2). De Aza and Desmond both get 4 rbis. Dominguez and Flores plate 3 runners each. Kendrik (1-1) faces 6 batters in the 1st giving up 4 hits and 5 runs. Flynn followed going 5 innings and giving up 14 hits and 10 runs! Rusin (1-1) gets the win despite giving up 6 runs. Bellisario gets the save (1) and he gives up 4 runs.

Game #3:

Each team gets 6 hits – boring! Tepesch starts, but walks off after getting the first batter and is sidelined for 20 days. Chen comes in and pitches 3.2 innings giving up 2 hits and no runs. He picks up the win as Columbus blanks the Capitals 4-0. Varvaro and LeCure (S 1) continue the dominance. Lough 2 run PH single key a 3 run 4th.

Game #4:

After a day off (pitching staffs were happy) the battles continued. In this game each team nailed 14 hits that ended with a 9-5 Columbus win. A 3 run 6th and 4 run 7th turned the 4-2 Sacramento lead into a rout. Paul clubs 2 homers (1,2) for Sacremento, Carpenter gets 3 rbis for Columbus which only had 1 extra base hit in their 14. Bedard (1-1) gets the loss as he lost it inthe 6th. Milone stayed in the game through 6 and got the win (1-1), Hembree finished the game and got the save (1).

Game #5:

This game not only featured a more typical baseball score, 4-2, it also featured a Sacramento victory. The Capitals scored 2 inthe first on rbi single from Dominguez who goes to 2nd on De Aza error. He then scores on double by Ozuna. Caps add 2 more in the 3rd on a Wallace HR (1). Meanwhile Columbus scores 1 in the 2nd and 1 in the 4th – but that ends the scoring as Pettibone holds strong (W 1-1) and MeGee and Vincent (S 3) close it out. Oberholtzer takes the loss (0-1)

Game #6: The series finale starts with a Sacramento team that is TIRED! In fact, Ozuna had to start the game in a TIRED condition – there was no other non-fatigued option on the roster. Columbus gets 2 in the 2nd and 5th, adds another in the 6th and takes the game 5-1. Baker (1-0) gets the win in a limited appearance. Kendrick (1-2) takes another loss.
The other bad news for Sacramento – Asche goes down with an injury in the 6th when Zimmerman smashes a hard one off his leg. They had to help him from the field – report for the medical staff – 30 DAYS! Ouch.
After the game, the medical staff noted that Ozuna, who started the game fatigued, will miss 3 days of action, at least there is a day off coming.

Series Summary *

Columbus ended up winning 5 of 6 in some very run productive games. Pitching in this series was non-existent most (not all) of the time. Will Sacramento be testing the waters of their COVERAGE players as their team will start the next series with 7 players TIRED, BUSHED, or WORN-OUT (2 of those are already injured, 1 for 29 days, the other just 2). The good news – there are players on the farm that can cover, the bad news, most of them aren’t very good (yet).

Game #5:

Fremont 5-4 What looked like a 4-1 Virginia win turned sour in the 9th inning. The Sluggers C.Tillman threw 8 innings of 4-hit 1-run ball and when the bullpen took over they gave up a single, a 2-run homer by W.Rosario, 2 more hits and a 2-run single by B.Phillips.

·         Hollywood Werewolves @ Traverse City Crusaders

Series Preview

The Crusaders get ready for their home opener, as they look at packed crowd — probably the most they will see all season, as they are probably here to see former player Miguel Cabrera, who never got to play as a Crusader, but will battling his former Severn teammates.

Game #1:

It’s Jered Weaver (HOL) against Mark Buehrle (TCC).

Top of 1st
One-out double by Kinsler. Cabrera hits a frozen rope to center. Buehrle intentionally walks Goldschmidt to face lefty Jay Bruce. Bruce strikes out.

Top of the 2nd
Welington Castillo hits a one-out double. With two outs, Emilio Bonifacio draws a walk. Jayson Werth hits a ball down the line, past a diving Pena, and it keeps rolling into the corner as Byrd is after it — both Castillo & Bonifacio score, the relay is in, as Werth dives into third, a two-out, two-run triple!

Bottom of the 2nd
Brian Dozier hits a solo HR off of Weaver, it kept carrying until it went over the left field fence.
Crusaders trail 2-1.

Top of the 3rd
Miguel Cabrera, the former Severn Express star, singles over Dozier’s head to keep his hitting-streak alive at 8 games now.

Top of the 5th
